Police Officials Admit Madeleine McCann Investigation Is Under Threat Of Being Shelved

In the wake of there being no new ‘Earth-shattering leads’, according to a source for the Mail Online, there is the possibility that the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann may be shelved by Scotland Yard at the end of the month when money dries up.

Portuguese police ceased their investigation back in 2008, with Scotland Yard instigating their own investigation in 2011. Since then around £12 million has been spent on the investigation over an 8 year period. However, the Mail Online recently reported that Metropolitan Police Officials admitted to ‘no decision on future funding ha[ving] been made’ when a further £300, 000 had been sought to keep the investigation open. The investigation is currently being run by Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall.

Madeleine McCann went missing just before reaching her fourth birthday when the family were on holiday in Portugal back in 2007. Her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, have never stopped searching for her since her disappearance. However, there seems to be little hope left as reports have been made that the detectives left on the case (which has dropped from around 31 at the investigation’s peak, to 5 at present) are simply left carrying out ‘grunt-work’ due to the lack of significant leads. Furthermore, the detectives rarely leave their base of operations in South-London, having only made two trips last year to the location where Madeleine disappeared.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been twelve years since this horrible thing happened, and harder still to believe that we seem no closer to knowing for certain what happened to this poor girl.

The £12 million already spent during the investigation has been on travel costs, salaries, and other expenses, and without the further £300,000 the investigation may have to be abandoned. Although, speaking to the Mail online, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan police said that the investigation as yet ‘remains ongoing’, and the home office is reported to have confirmed its receipt of a request for more funding to the investigation. However, in lieu of more solid leads in the investigation, it looks like the funding may not be provided.

In another statement made to the Daily Mail, a representative of the McCann family stated:

“If and when the Met Police investigation comes to an end, Kate and Gerry remain incredibly grateful for all the work that has been carried out over the past years.

They know it can’t go on forever. They appreciate everything the authorities have done to try and get a resolution after all this time.”

Without further funding, the Metropolitan Police’s investigation into her disappearance may well come to an end; however, the previously cited McCann spokesperson also alluded to the possibility that the family may use money from the ‘Find Maddie Fund’, which reportedly stands at £1 million, to pay for private investigators to continue the work. The McCann’s have previously hired private investigators in the aid for the search for Madeleine, but this could be the first time the search may be conducted without the official aid of Scotland Yard since their investigation began in 2011.

With it being such a long time since her disappearance, sadly chances of fresh leads appearing seem less and less likely, and it’s awful to conceive that we may never find out what happened to poor Maddie. AAx
