Inmate Claims He’d Rather Eat Nothing At All Than Eat “Worse Than Dog Food” Dinners

One of life’s great joys is food. My waistline knows that all too well!

Whether we’re tucking into a family favorite Mac n’ Cheese or being treated to a special dinner somewhere über fancy, the fact remains, food can be a really comforting and enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, a decent meal isn’t always available to everyone. Many families struggling to make ends meet might find it difficult to set dinner on the table, similarly, homeless individuals will find it difficult to feed themselves properly. We can all agree this is a deeply problematic issue and that these people are deserving of our help and attention.

However, news outlet, Manchester Evening News recently reported on the poor standard of an inmate’s meals and the pictures have sparked conflict. Some claim convicted criminals deserve no better and others argue that no human should be so poorly nourished. The inmate in question has been communicating with outside sources to express his disgust at the situation, claiming the food is “worse than dog food”. The inmate has been photographing meals (risking extra prison time for possession of a mobile phone) and the images in question do, admittedly, look revolting.

The food is almost indistinguishable and looks less than appetizing. Though most would agree inmates are not deserving of five-star fine dining whilst children and society’s most vulnerable continue to go without food, I think it is fair to say these meals are not fit for human consumption (regardless of whether or not that person is incarcerated or otherwise)

Anything this beige cannot be nourishing! Sure, to a five-year-old this might look like a perfectly tasty dinner that just needs a few gallons of Ketchup to accentuate the already exquisite flavors… but anyone over that age is probably aware that bean-pasta (that’s a thing?!) is not a meal that can sustain an adult and keep them healthy.

When you’re unable to distinguish just what exactly is on your plate, take that as an indicator not to eat it. I’m going to guess an omelet? Or maybe a very sad set of tacos? Either way, this isn’t something you’d want appearing on your plate…

Who doesn’t love Italian food, right? I think whoever had to endure this pizza is probably less enamored with Italian cuisine than the rest of us. Whilst Some of us may feel this is “all a criminal deserves” we have to remember these people have already been stripped of their rights and freedom? And presumably, some are incarcerated for minor crimes? Even if they are criminals, they’re still human beings.

Fish and chips is another fave meal of mine… I’m not entirely sure if that statement is relevant to his photo as those ‘fish’ and ‘chips’ look questionable at best…

The prison, based in Warrington, England, released a statement on the images to Manchester Evening News claiming:

“All prisoners are offered fruit and vegetables as part of three healthy meals a day, which meet nutritional guidelines set out by the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health.

“We are investigating these pictures and any prisoner found using a mobile can face extra time behind bars.”

“Three healthy meals a day”??? We’re yet to be convinced…

The Ministry of Justice reported just £2.02 is budgeted to feed each prisoner per day. It’s easy to brush off this number as a suitable amount for individuals who broke the law but isn’t a prison sentence punishment enough? We’re not suggesting unreasonable measures but it couldn’t hurt to provide meals that are at least distinguishable as food?

So, what’s your stance on this sticky issue? Are these horrible meals just another way inmates are reaping the consequences of their crimes? Or should we be more sympathetic to their nutritional needs? Let us know in the comments. AAx
