Has Sandra Oh Finally Put “Grey’s Anatomy” Return Rumours To Bed?

Fans have long been waiting for a return of Cristina Yang to Grey’s Anatomy since she departed in season 10, and it’s a question that Sandra Oh has been fielding since, well, about ten minutes after the episode finished.

It doesn’t seem like what is now half a century since Sandra Oh and Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) made, ‘Where Does The Good Go’ by Teagan And Sara near impossible to listen to for most fans as the pair danced their way to a heartfelt goodbye. Oh was not only nominated for plenty awards during her time on the show (now in its fifteenth series), but more importantly managed to win awards in the hearts of fans (yes I just made that metaphor) which is why people flew into a five year long (and counting) period of mourning for the character.

Since then Oh has been asked countless times about the possible return of her character, and her answers have only ever been in the grey are (see what I did there) between no, and a slim maybe should the conditions be right. And when I say conditions I don’t mean bombs in the hospital or crazed gunmen demanding surgery be performed, although her character could indeed handle it, but more in terms of the frequent rumours from when she first left the show of her character potentially returning for the series finale – whenever the show finally twists its final twist.

However, Oh has had a fantastic amount of success on the fantastic ‘Killing Eve’, which eve-n won her a Golden Globe – I’m on fire – and it seems that she’s having a great time on the show. In a recent interview with Extra promoting the new series of Killing Eve Oh finally put the rumours the bed about a possible to return to Grey’s Anatomy… and it was a hard no.

 

“No. Creatively, you have moved on and while I know, and I deeply appreciate, because I can feel it from the fans, how much they love Cristina and how the show keeps Cristina alive, for me, [‘Killing Eve’] is my home now… this is where I am… I am Eve and that’s where I plan to stay as long as the show will have me, and that’s really where I want to be.”

Quite simply, it seems that Oh has moved on, and that should be applauded. Her new show is fantastic and fans still have plenty of great quality time with Cristina to look back through. And this should not be seen as me telling fans to stop being upset that she isn’t in the show any longer, I’d love to see her back! But, there must be a sense of exhaustion for Oh that the subject is so frequently brought up, even to her co-stars…

Ellen Pompeo: “Selfishly I would love to see Sandra Oh come back to Grey’s […] But I also love Killing Eve so much, and I love seeing her have so many of these incredible moments. So, as much as I love Sandra, I’d rather see her shine out on her own. I enjoy that more. That‘s more gratifying to me.”

However, no matter how many times she denies coming back, the rumours will always be there, and I suppose that it’s testament to her that she managed to capture a character who appealed to so many people for so long. Perhaps when ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ does finally finish (if it ever does, let’s hope not), then maybe Sandra Oh will be safe to move on… unless the Cristina Yang spin-off rumours begin, imagine that!

So it is with a heavy heart that I may finally have come to terms with Cristina and Meredith’s last dance being just that (*grabs the tissues). So I’ll throw on some Teagan and Sara, curl up into a ball, and look forward to the new series of Killing Eve!
