Asian Stores Are Ditching Plastic For Leaf Packaging And We’re Ready To Follow Suit

It’s well documented that our over-use of plastics is having disastrous effects on our environment.

Though most of us make an effort to recycle, shop responsibly and fund ethical companies it can be hard to avoid the dreaded plastic! Often, supermarkets don’t make it easy to be eco-friendly but shops in Asia are pioneering new ways of packaging goods in a completely sustainable way! The answer is leaves!dog autumn GIF

Though the leaves don’t look quite like the ones this pooch is enjoying they’re still really pretty additions to the food they’re wrapping! Take a look!

What a nice change this makes to all that shiny cellophane, right?! Seeing fruit and veg bunched up in little green bundles, it looks kind of cool, right?

Look at those neatly packaged veggies! How did it take us this long to discover that leaves were the eco-friendly, extremely aesthetic solution to all our consumer woes? I’m not mad, I’m just kind of disappointed…

Up until recently, 30% of the world’s waste ended up in China and subsequently, Asia was branded as being responsible for the majority of waste on our Earth. Now, Vietnam and Thailand are searching for ways to become completely plastic-free altogether.

Rimping Supermarket has been praised across social media for its zero-waste leaf packaging of fresh food after their ingenious solution was spotted by one savvy social media user.

Perfect Homes Chiangmai’s posted the discovery of Rimping’s packaging solutions on their social media and the news was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. The team member who photographed the food is reported as saying;

“We just popped in to get a few items while we were waiting to sign some contracts with our lawyer, who was delayed, so we were not even meant to be there at that time. When I noticed the veg wrapped in banana leaves and simply liked the idea ad showed my wife who picked a few up to buy. I thought I would take a few pictures and just post to the page, and that was it”

With 3.5 million views and over 17 thousand shares, the news of these banana leaf packages has quickly spread! And it is hoped that fans of the packaging will pressure their local stores and supermarkets to make the change! Every little helps, right?

Some were quick to point out that not everything in the store was plastic free (there’s always one, isn’t there?!) but surely what matters is that this is a step in the right direction?! We need to do everything we can to help save the Earth and small changes are the way to begin.

While the supermarket isn’t perfect it’s a lot better than others. We sure do hope that customers demonstrate their preference for sustainable, green packaging in favor of plastics.

Would you jump at the chance to buy banana-leaf wrapped produce? Or is there another environmentally conscious alternative that you wish more people knew about?? Let us know in the comments and be sure to share this with your friends and family, together we’ll help to save the world! AAx
