Thousands OF Swedish People Are Getting Microchips Injected Into Them And It’s Making Us Shudder
Has technology officially gone too far? Microchipping is taking off in Sweden but it’s making our skin crawl!
No bigger than a grain of rice, a microchip containing your personal identification can now be injected into your hand. The procedure has taken off in Sweden, with over 4000 Swedes having undergone ‘microchipping’. Some are claiming it’s the ‘way of the future’ but if we put science fiction aside for five seconds… I’m only able to see it as the way to feeling seriously grossed out.
Maybe it’s just that I’m no good with needles but I can’t be alone in finding this an especially disgusting step in our progression as a species?
But maybe you’re mad enough to be interested in this grain of rice sized nightmare? In which case you’re in luck as the procedure, carried out since 2015, is reported to only cause a “slight sting”. The syringe quickly injects the microchip and the rest is history. Horrible, horrible history…
So, if you were deranged enough to have the microchip inserted into your innocent hand what would be the benefit? I wish I could tell you nothing and an end would come to this squirm-inducing trend but there are some fairly nifty advantages to having your ID injected into you.
For example, some employees need only wave their microchipped hand in front of their workplace’s identification technology to be allowed access into their building. Which, even I can’t deny, is preferable to scrabbling for keys in the deepest depths of your handbag.
The chip can also double as a gym membership card and a contactless credit card. Which is *handy* (That pun might be the only good thing to come out of this microchipping nonsense) The interaction below expresses my feelings on the subject very well…
Despite my reservations, the appeal of the microchip is understandable. Most of us treat our smartphones as a database of our personal data anyway. In fact, it’s hard to catch some of us without a bit of technology in our hand, so why not go that step further? And put the technology in our hand, indefinitely? ‘Biohacking’ (modifying the body with technology) might well be a likelihood in the not too distant future… *shudder*
Ben Libberton, a microbiologist expresses some doubts about a microchipped future. Whilst there is some risk the implantation could potentially threaten the immune system, Libberton believes it is our personal data that is most vulnerable. He states;
“At the moment, the data collected and shared by implants is small, but it’s likely that this will increase.”
“If a chip can one day detect a medical problem, who finds out and when?”
“the more data is stored in a single place as could happen with a chip, the more risk it could be used against us.”
As is usually the case with these new technology crazes, nobody has all the answers and there’s still lots of potential for others to take advantage of the system. Typical.
Sweden, as usual, is leading the way in technology and whilst opinions vary widely on whether the microchip is a good idea one thing is for certain; I’m not getting one.
Would you get microchipped? Is this a great technological advancement or just another freakin’ fad?
