Heartbroken Kitty Still Shows Up In Yard To See His Departed Dog Friend Gracie

I have to warn you, folks – if you love animals as much as I do, you should probably get the tissues ready, because things are about to get emotional.

Gracie the dog ad a neighboring kitty cat were the best of friends. They would have regularly scheduled playdates where the cat, who Gracie’s family nicknamed ‘Baby Grey’, would walk over to Gracie’s house and wait for her to come and play outside.

Sadly, their playdates came to a sad end when Gracie recently passed away, but Baby Grey still shows up almost every day, expecting her friend to be there.

Gracie’s mom, Shea Belew Brennaman, first noticed Baby Grey visiting her yard about two and a half years ago.

“I think it lives two cul-de-sacs over from us and I don’t know its name,” the fourth-grade teacher from Decatur Alabama told The Dodo. “Me and my family just refer to it as Baby Grey.”

Brennaman said she spotted the sweet kitty in her yard one day, where Gracie, who spent most of her time, relaxing. Not much of a guard dog, the sweet-natured Gracie was much more interested in making friends than keeping Baby Grey out of the property.

“Gracie was an American Eskimo and stayed outside almost all the time,” Brennaman said. “She loved nature and, while she was a protector of our house, she loved all other animals and they loved her.”

Gracie was known to make friends with chipmunks, rabbits, pretty much any animal who wondered into the family yard – but she was especially fond of Baby Grey.

“Gracie accepted her into our yard immediately and the two became fast friends,” Brennaman said.

Cats are creatures of habit, and Baby Grey made sure to make their playdates a regular occurence. The two used to hang out together for hours, bathing in the sun and generally living their best lives.

“We would leave Gracie tomatoes on our porch, as they were her favorite treat, and she would share them with the cat,” Brennaman said.

This was a big deal – Gracie wouldn’t usually share those with anyone!

“When Baby Grey started coming over frequently the two of them shared tomatoes and sunbathed together,” she said. “Sunbathing was their absolute favorite activity. Gracie was always doing things for the people she loved, including saving Brennaman from a water moccasin when Gracie was just 8-months-old.

“She had a sweet personality,” Brennaman noted. “[She] was a friend to all and was very motherly, especially to our Yorkie.”

But Gracie’s days of playing in the yard became less frequent after her 12th birthday, when it became apparent that she was not her usual self. It was later discovered that Gracie had lymphoma, and didn’t have long to live.

“Gracie spent most of her remaining days on the cold porch,” Brennaman said.

“I think part of it gave her relief but, in reality, she was saying goodbye to her territory and to all of her friends in her yard.”

As heartbreaking as this is, at least her friend Baby Grey was there to sit by her side.

“Baby Grey came to see her several times in her last days and, while there was no tomato eating, the two just laid there to be with each other,” Brennanman said.

“They had that kind of connection where nothing needed to be said or done. They just wanted to be with each other.”

They really do sound like they were the best of friends. Sadly, Gracie died only a month after her diagnosis, and her passing seems to have hit Baby Grey hard. The heartbroken kitty now shows up at the porch as usual, but always looks sad when he isn’t greeted by his old friend.

“Since Gracie’s death, several times a week, Baby Grey will come to our porch,” Brennaman said. “She will first come right up to the door and look in for Gracie.”

It’s so heartbreaking to hear about Gracie’s sad death, but it comforts me to know that she and Baby Grey had such great times together. There is nothing as pure as love between animals. Rest in peace, Gracie.
