‘Eggboy’ Speaks Out After Egging Senator Who Made Controversial Christchurch Comments

You will all be familiar with the tragic events in New Zealand on Friday, in which a crazed far-right gunman killed dozens of people at a mosque in the town of Christchurch, New Zealand.

The aftermath of the horrific attack saw a national mourning, and a drew condemnation from people of all political leanings.

However, one senator in neighboring Australia, named Fraser Anning, released a statement in which he made hugely controversial and unpopular comments about the attack, in which he seemed to many to blame the victims for being there.

Anning said: “The real cause of the bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”

His comments sparked outrage from commenters across the political spectrum, and things took a turn for the dramatic the following day when the senator was egged by a 17 year-old boy, as he was being interviewed on his comments by media.

The 17-year-old Australian stood behind Senator Anning, before smashing an egg on the back of his head, before being tackled to the ground.

As you can see, the politician then turned round and aimed a blow at the youngster, before he was dragged off by a group of men.

It came to light that the young man was named Will Connolly from Victoria, Australia. He had egged the senator in a direct response to his comments about the shooting victims the day before.

Over the weekend, he became something of a star on social media, and soon came to be referred to as ‘Eggboy’, with a great deal of people supporting his actions, as well as some condemning him for resorting to violence.

Not much has been heard from him since then, but on Sunday morning, Connolly shared a video in which he jokingly warned fans against doing the same. Connolly said: “Don’t egg a politician, you’ll get tackled by 30 bogans at the same time, I learnt the hard way, f*ck.”

For those of you unfamiliar with Aussie slang, ‘bogan’ is a term for someone from Australia who is considered uncouth – it’s a little like the term ‘redneck’, but for Aussies.

Anyway, Connolly didn’t seem too fazed by his ordeal. He laughed his way through the video and captioned it: “No regrets.”

Since his egging, Connolly’s Instagram following has grown to more than 300,000 and #EggBoyHero has been trending on Twitter.

Oh, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to pay for his legal costs, as well as ‘more eggs’. It beat the target in minutes, unsurprisingly. It has been reported that Connolly will donate this money to the families of the victims of the Christchurch shooting.

Meanwhile, a petition to have Senator Anning removed from the Australian Parliament has received more than 250,000 signatures.

Where do you stand on this, folks? Was the young boy justified in doing what he did? Did the bystanders go to far in tackling him to the ground? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
