20 Of The Funniest Place Names EVER
Sometimes you think, why on Earth would you call a street or town THAT?! These people definitely didn’t think these names through before committing to them. I feel like these names came to do when someone made a joke about a name idea and then people actually stuck to it.
These terrible names at least provide us with some entertainment when walking or driving around these places. I am convinced these people must have been joking when they came up with these names and if so, then I appreciate their sense of humour!
1.) Bell End…
Twitter / Sandwell Council
Bell End is a rude word in Britain and this street sign managed to upset a lot of people! A petition was created to change the ‘silly’ name but a counter-petition beat it with 4,800 signatures to keep the hilarious historic sign. I’m in favour of that!
2.) One of the worst street names

11-year-old Caroline Gonzalez won a competition to become Mayor of her town for the day. She decided to use her power for the worst thing possible and inflict her love of Justin Beiber onto a street name. 11-year-olds really shouldn’t be given that much power…
3.) Nice…

This rather interestingly named road in Ludford, Lincolnshire was named Britain’s rudest street in 2014. However, its origins are actually very innocent! It was named in the 19th century by John Hands after his wife called Fanny. Not so bad after all!
4.) Squeeze Guts Alley

I mean, this name basically does what it says, it’s so narrow that you have to literally squeeze your guts to get past another person. It was given the nickname in the 18th century and it’s stuck so much that it now even has its own sign!
5.) Designed to make you smile

This nicely named street in California was actually designed to make people smile and hopefully temporarily forget all about their worries for a while. I like their style!
6.) Could this be the silliest?

This one just might be the silliest name of a street I’ve seen so far. I mean, it is quite literally what it says on the tin. Apparently, it’s the back passageway through to another area of town.
7.) Come on, you can be more inventive than that!

I feel like this person wanted to name a street something funny but had completely run out of inspiration so they just called it Silly Lane. You can be more inventive than that!
8.) Best street ever
Instagram / hobbyography
I love the alliteration going on with this awesome street name. Unfortunately, the residents aren’t quite so keen on it as they are worried about property prices dropping. I’m not sure why because I WANT to live on a street with this name!
9.) The rudest one yet
Instagram / carrotknackers
This is probably the rudest street name in the entire world. The town of Westbury actually had the choice to change the name but they didn’t because it relates to their history. It used to be the site of iron works where there were slag heaps. Back in the day, it didn’t have rude connotations!
10.) Lost in translation
Instagram / tinlissie
This actually means ‘to rejuvenate or revive’ in Japanese. Still sounds phonetically funny to us English speakers though!
11.) That’s a strange name for a bridge
Instagram / fatdudeonabike
Tickle Cock Bridge in Castleford was actually replaced in 2008 and renamed Tittle Cott. The locals then protested and the original name came back!
12.) That’s a bit rude!

This isn’t actually pronounced how it looks but it will certainly grab your attention when driving through! Locals claim you don’t pronounce it like ‘ugly’ but the Ugley Women’s Institute did still feel the need to change its name to the Women’s Institute of Ugley.
13.) Sounds like a fun holiday destination

Scotland definitely isn’t dull thanks to the beautiful landscape and scenery. Thankfully, the Scottish have a good sense of humour! I really want to visit Dull now, I’m sure it’ll be a blast!
14.) Excuse me?
Flickr / Jeff Anderson
This is another example of how much language has changed. Dumb used to mean mute and this lane is named after a mute medicine healer lady who used to live in the town.
15.) Sounds lovely
Instagram / zemoamerica
This isn’t exactly a very pleasant road name! Mynchen used to mean nun, a lot of nuns would live in this area so they named it after those ladies. They should have spelt it the correct way for the time though!
16.) Best alley ever!

This is an…inventive alley name! I think this is my favourite, it’s just so random which makes it hilarious.
17.) That’s…bold
Instagram / mundoroz
Thanks to this street name, you are four times less likely to sell a house in this area. What was a funny name must be incredibly annoying for the locals!
18.) Fair enough
Instagram/bolshiewalshy
People around this area clearly just don’t care that much and I can completely get on board with this! At least it makes passerby’s laugh.
19.) I’d rather not do that!
Instagram / Jackson_beach
This name would make me rather nervous driving around this area. Why are they saying everyone will break their necks?! Slightly unnerving.
20.) Boring, Oregon
Flickr / Andy Nystrom
The people of Boring in Oregon definitely have a sense of humour! I’m glad Dull and Boring found each other, even though the residents live overseas, they have a sense of humour in common.
I think my street names are far too ordinary now, not sure why house prices drop around places with silly or rude street names. People take life far too seriously! Would you live down any of these streets? Let us know in the comments!
