Tips to Take the Stress from Planning a Family Holiday

Going on holiday with small children is a very different experience to when you were flying solo or just with your partner. Your destination wish-list looks very different, and if it is your first time going on holiday as a family, you may be feeling nervous and apprehensive about making decisions.

However, the good news is that with Europe on your doorstep, there are plenty of options to choose from and all within a manageable two-hour flight. So where do you start when looking for a holiday?

Are you a sun worshipper who just needs the sun and a pool, or are you more of a beachgoer?

Do you like to have an all-inclusive hotel experience where you can pay upfront and know that your food and drinks are covered? Or do Balearic Island villa holidays conjure the image of the ultimate relaxing family experience?

You need to understand what you want from your holiday. Everybody has different motivations behind their holiday choice; there is no right or wrong answer. After all, it’s your holiday!

Once you’ve booked your holiday, your thoughts will turn to what to pack. Just leaving the house requires military precision packing, so the thought of going away for a prolonged period can seem like mission impossible. However, it doesn’t need to be, and here are the reasons why:

1) You can buy nappies and other baby paraphernalia abroad. Most of the big brands of milk formula are the same abroad as it is in the UK, it’s just given a native name. You’ll tell from the branding if it is the one that you use. You only need to pack enough for the travel time and for the first few days until you get your bearings and find the shops.

2) Your children don’t need a huge selection of clothes to wear, they will mainly be in their swimming gear, and if their shorts and t-shirts get soiled you can wash them, and they will be dried overnight.

3) You don’t need to pack lots of toys. Your children will be keen to explore their new surroundings and make friends with other children.

One thing that you should pack is a pushchair if age appropriate. Even if your toddler doesn’t use one anymore at home, walks to the beach will be easier, plus they are a great way to transport beach bags. You may also find that in the heat your child needs an afternoon siesta, and a pushchair will be the ideal place for a snooze while you have a long lunch. A pushchair will also allow you to stay out later in the evenings too without having to break from your child’s usual bedtime.

Family holidays are an opportunity to spend time together without the distraction of the every day – having to go to work, complete household chores, or other commitments. Planning a family holiday can be stressful, but as this article shows, it doesn’t need to be.
