The 15 Cleverest Gravestones Of People Who Really Did Have The Last Laugh
Gravestones are naturally somber things, but this hasn’t stopped people from trying to have fun with them or use them in the most creative way possible… I mean, it’s gonna be above you for a while so may as well make it personal!
So here are 15 of the smartest, funniest, or just most downright excellent uses of those sorrowful slabs of rock that hopefully prove that they can be made slightly less sorrowful after all!
1.) In Death As In Life
(Source: Imgur)
I might have to steal this, ’cause I don’t put on airs for people now so I’m sure as heck not gonna be putting on airs when I’m dead!
2.) The Secret Recipe
(Source: Flickr)
Meals can be a great way to remember loved ones, so this is so lovely that she’s not only passed on her signature recipe to her loved ones to remember her by, but anyone who should happen upon this, I’ll have to give it a go (any excuse to make fudge I guess!)
3.) Good To Know…?
(Source: Wikipedia )
Well, I mean, things were very different in the 1800’s… let’s just thank goodness that we’ve moved on from these sort of justifications! Anyway, moving swiftly on…
4.) My Type Of Woman!
(Source: Pinterest)
Yep, that is a level of apathy towards important landmark moments that I can really get on board with! Don’t even give death the satisfaction of being freakin’ bothered!
5.) Keep It In Your Casket!
(Source: Pinterest)
Perhaps a little too personal Joseph and Anna, although I guess sometimes you can’t help where the mood takes you!
6.) Spike Milligan: ‘I Told You I Was Ill’
(Source: Wikipedia)
This line has been taken a few times since, but I thought I’d put the spike Milligan one ’cause I freakin’ love Spike Milligan. The epitaph says ‘I told you I was ill’ in Irish – ‘Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite.’
This epitaph was also voted the UK’s favorite ever epitaph in a nationwide poll, beating the likes of Oscar Wilde and Winston Churchill!
7.) Aren’t We All
(Source: Flickr )
Well, why should we not all get a pyramid in our honor? Heck, if you don’t have belief in yourself enough to think that you deserve a pyramid, you freakin’ do! Never give up on your dreams, especially if your dreams are to have your memory immortalized in the form of a giant geometric stone structure!
8.) Be Positive
(Source: Reddit)
The ‘power of positive thinking’ is a sometimes fantastic thing advocated for by hippies everywhere, and here is arguably the antithesis of all of those people combined. Although, I suppose there is a slightly positive spin on death here, even if it is veiled behind some potent negativity.. good on you Paul for remaining positive to the end!
9.) Trust A Writer…
(Source: Flickr)
Billy Wilder was an American filmmaker, and it’s a testament to his talents that he managed to craft this beautifully succinct and hilarious epitaph!
10.) Wait… He Died How?
(Source: findagrave.com )
This one is just baffling, and arguably my favorite due to how obscure and apparently true this description is! According to Susan Kane: ‘George Spencer Millet worked in the NY Metropolitan Life Building as an office boy.
On his 15th birthday, he was chased by a group of young women who wanted to give him a birthday kiss. In the scuffle he fell on his ink eraser, which pierced his heart and killed him.’
11.) The Cynic
(Source: flickr)
There’s always one who has to be a downer! Seriously though, I love this one so much, it’s funny, but also bleakly accurate!
12.) Sibling Rivalry
(Source: findagrave.com )
Anyone who has a brother or sister will appreciate this one! There’s arguably no better way to have the final word over your sibling and lock in a victory for your lifelong rivalry! Wherever you are now Cecil, pop the champagne!
13.) To The Point
(Source: Imgur )
Straight to the point, I like that! I am curious about what it is about how they died that made it a fail, was it maybe just a really daft way to die, like being hit by a girder being swung around by a gorilla? Because that would be a fail I guess.
14.) Direct Line To The Dead
(Source: Reddit)
This is actually the gravestone of Elijah Bond, the man who invented the ouija board according to reddit user Dinoguy89 (those names just get sillier every time I see one). I guess this guy did his best to stay in touch, I wonder if he’s up to much…
15.) Do Not Disturb
(Source: Wikipedia)
Actress Joan Hackett is a woman after my own heart! I spend my whole life being bothered and woken up, when I’m dead might be the only time I get some freakin’ peace!
So those were 15 of the best gosh darn gravestones around (oh, the sentences you never expected you’d write)! Let me know in the comments which one was your favourite, or if you know of any funny ones yourself! AAx
