Man Erects Electric Fence To Keep Kids Off His Lawn

One Virginian homeowner, having grown sick of local kids trespassing on his property, littering and damaging his property, put up an electrified fence around his lawn as an effort to keep the kids out, sparking outrage amongst parents and neighbours!

It’s a problem often jokingly typified by caricatures of the elderly; but, it is a real problem for a lot of homeowners, kids disrespecting their property. One Bryan Tucker had enough of nothing being done about the trash being left and damage being done to his property so took matters into his own hands in a somewhat shocking move…

Talking to NBC about the problem with the kids, Tucker told NBC:

“We’ve been warning people for years […] We called transportation and they refused to do anything about it. They said it was my responsibility if the kids get hurt on my land and that I need to tell them to get off my land and stay in the street. I’m not in charge of other people’s children.”

Once he put up the electric fence around his lawn, many concerned parents called the police saying he should take the fence down. One local parent said, ‘My daughter walked out and said he’s got a fence up […] Then someone said it was electric and I said ‘whoa no!’ If something happens to one of those kids they’re going to have lot of angry parents.’

It might be a little severe a precaution, but is it not his right to try and keep the kids off his property? If the parents of the kids are not doing anything, nor are the authorities to prevent kids from leaving litter all over his lawn and ignoring his ‘No Trespassing’ signs then is he meant to just clean up his own lawn every day because the kids have no respect of other people’s property?

That being said though, an electric fence seems a little extreme, why not just put up a normal fence and see if that keeps them out? Also, what’s that gonna do to his freakin’ electricity bill?! Seriously, I’m actually curious, I could do with one to keep my husband out of the biscuit jar!

Tucker was ultimately made to take the fence down as he was in violation of County Codes, but its uncertain whether he will take the fence completely down or simply move it so that it does not violate any laws.

Other neighbours were concerned that the fence would be a problem due to the fact that even kids simply walking past the property could fall on the fence and be injured: ‘What if there’s a little kid, 2 or 3 years old riding their tricycle and they fall and they get shocked? That’s not going to be OK.’ And, aside from the obvious fact that you can’t fall off a tricycle (or at least it’s immensely difficult) they do raise a point.

There has, however, been a surprising amount of support for Tucker’s fence from parents online also, with people posting such comments as:

‘They need to learn RESPECT. They will only get shocked. Not electrocuted.’

and, ‘If you teach your kids respect for their and other people’s things he wouldn’t have had to do that.’

Who knows if Tucker will re-erect the fence, or maybe erect a normal fence instead around his property to keep the kids out. What do you make of this, do you think it’s overkill? Or do you think he was right to put the electric fence up? AAx
