20 Wonderful, Wistful, And Downright Weird Pregnancy Facts That Will Make You Want A Baby ASAP!
Pregnancy isn’t always nine months of pure bliss! Swollen feet, morning sickness and every person on the freakin’ planet dealing out some old-wives tale about what and what not to do!

So in amongst all the inlaws giving you grief on just how they did things, it’s good to read up about pregnancy, away from their judgemental glare!
Some may surprise you! Others could relieve you and some… some are just downright weird!
1. Babies in the womb can taste the food their mothers eat!
If you happen to eat food with strong flavors like garlic (and I freakin’ LOVED garlic bread through my pregnancy!) the flavors of the food can pass through the amniotic fluid in the womb. In fact, one study has shown that babies whose mothers drank carrot juice displayed a preference for the drink when they were out in the world!
2. Want to give birth? Stimulate your nipples!

Rubbing or fiddling with a woman’s nipples helps to release the hormone oxytocin which, in turn, help to start contractions! You might want to let your partner know all about this one! Don’t be shy, this technique has a special name, “the comfort technique”, which makes totally okay to do in the delivery room…
3. If 9 months feel like an eternity imagine the woman who was pregnant for a year!

That’s right ladies! 9 months may seem like a long time to wait but spare a thought for the gal with the longest ever recorded pregnancy! Beulah Hunter from Los Angeles was pregnant for a year and 10 days!
4. It’s possible to get pregnant from oral sex… kind of… if you have a knife fight afterward
Okay, so strap in for this one ladies… in 1988 a 15-year-old girl from a southern African nation called Lesotho, went to hospital exhibiting all the signs of labor. The only confusing part was that the woman didn’t have a vagina.
Doctors theorized that the most likely explanation was that when the girl was in a knife fight nine months earlier (as one often is!) shortly after giving oral sex to her new boyfriend (the best precursor to a knife fight, I always think!) the incisions made to her body in the knife fight allowed an opening for sperm to enter her abdominal cavity and the sperm made his merry way from there!
Stranger things have happened… oh wait, no, this is definitely the strangest thing that’s ever happened, never mind…
5. More twins are born in central Africa than anywhere else in the world!

Who’d have thunk it! This fact has persuaded me when to look for my next holiday, I’m going where all the babies get matching outfits!
6. … You can thank the yams for all those twins, too!
Though this “fact” is disputed I’m still willing to keep it in the list. Why? Because yams are really freakin’ good for you! And if you eat just one more than you would have then I can rest easy, knowing I did my bit!
… Also I just wanted to include this cute pic of a baby tucking into his mushed yams!
7. From the second trimester, babies will pee in the uterus… then drink it
That’s right! Your unborn baby is stuck in a weird cycle of weeing and while it’s absolutely a normal thing it’s still freakin’ weird!
8. Don’t worry about a bit of baby wee though, amniotic fluid is mostly sterile urine
Are we supposed to feel comforted by the fact it’s sterile? Like, is that really supposed to fill us with joy? “Don’t mind my baby bump! Or as I like to call it, my p*ss pouch!”
9. A baby starts preparing its first poo at around 21 weeks
Of course, the little poop won’t pass until the pooper is born and can release it on to the unsuspecting world in the worst way possible; got a new couch? A lovely dog? A pretty table cloth? Your baby has been preparing to poop on it for 21 weeks.
10. Baby girls are born with all their eggs!
That’s right! Though boys don’t develop sperm until puberty, little girls are born with everything already ready! Which is really crazy when you think about it and just further proof that girls rule!
11. Pregnant women and new mothers can lactate automatically to the sound of a baby crying!
The baby doesn’t even have to be theirs! Women just know when a baby needs feeding I guess… and we’re so used to helping each other out while the guys mess things up, you can easily believe this one!
12. Rabbits, pigs, dogs, whales, and humans all start out as eggs that are roughly the same size!
And judging by the size difference between these two cuties, I’m not surprised! But whales and humans?! That’s a heck of a lot of growing for a whale to do!
13. Getting heartburn? Your baby is more likely to be born with a full head of hair!
The old wives tale is true! If you suffer heartburn your baby is more likely to have a head full of hair! I don’t claim to understand the exact science but if you’re set on discovering the reasons why check it out here!
14. For every two-thousand babies born, one will have a tooth!

15. Being pregnant can make you… uhm… oh what’s that word…
FORGETFUL! It’s been documented that women become more forgetful after giving birth. Which isn’t… oh god… erm… good?
16. Babies cry in the womb (so it’s full of tears and wee, mmm!)
4D scans have allowed us to check up on unborn babies as we’ve never done before! The good news is that we can find out if anything is wrong earlier than ever before, bad news? The poor little loves are crying!
But not to worry, apparently it’s all just practising…
17. Over the course of pregnancy, a woman’s uterus can expand up to five hundred times its normal size!
Boy, oh boy! And I thought I wasn’t flexible! I was stretching all over the shop and didn’t know it! I’m off to join a yoga class and show ’em how it’s done…
18. Your heart and feet increase in size when you’re pregnant!
I didn’t know about this one! I was so big during pregnancy I couldn’t see my feet under my bump! And erm… it kind of stayed the same… but that’s more from the food baby than anything else…
19. When a pregnant woman is full term she produces more estrogen in a day than a non-pregnant woman could in three years
No wonder pregnant women are always so exhausted! They’re busy being estrogen machines! You go momma’s!
20. A baby’s fingerprints will have set by three months of pregnancy
Your little one has already formed their very own teeny, tiny fingerprints, that are all their own after just three months of pregnancy! If that isn’t enough to make your heart melt, I don’t know what is!
Did any of these surprise you? Is there something you wish you’d know before you became pregnant? If so, be sure to let me know in the comments below! AAx
