The Rest Of The World Reveals The 20 Things Americans Do That Make It Obvious They’re From America

Us Americans love a holiday (I’ve lived here long enough to say that), but we’re not always the most subtle tourists. So, when Reddit user mknapp37 (somehow I don’t think that’s their real name) asked, ‘Besides their accent, what’s one way you know a tourist is American?’ the internet went mad.

Most of the responses were from American’s owning up to things they definitely don’t do themselves, prompting people to reply agreeing vehemently that they also definitely don’t do those incredibly specific things either! The thread that came as a result was hilariously relatable, and here are my 20 favourite things that American tourists definitely don’t do…

A few people commented this, but hey, you’re on your FREAKIN’ holidays I think you’re allowed to be excited, also I’m told I’m going deaf so I like people speaking up a bit… but that could be from all the shouting…

2.) ‘Where’s The Restroom?’

(Source: Reddit)

‘Restroom’ is a particularly American term sure. If you’ve been to Britain or Europe you’ll realise that certain places have much less polite terms for the ‘Restroom’ that are much more to the point… if you follow.

3.) User Tylerss20 Simply Said, ‘This…’

(Source:dad-shoes.com)

Okay, this is a pretty solid one, but what’s the big deal about wanting to be comfortable?!

4.) Old Stuff Is Cool, That’s Why Museums Exist

(Source: Reddit)

Sorry if we’re in awe of you’re culture, hot dang it take a freakin’ compliment places with interesting architecture and history. Yeah, that showed the… people with… interesting architecture and history. I don’t know who won there, or what I’m angry about anymore but I know I like old things, they make me feel younger.

5.) Not Afraid To Ask Questions

(Source: Reddit)

If new-age business jargon has taught us anything, it’s that:

  1. The word ‘synergy’ means literally whatever you want it to in a business situation.
  2. Being unafraid to ask questions is a good thing – unless it’s about the meaning of the word synergy.

6.) Being Too Generous

(Source: Reddit)

The rest of the world doesn’t have the same rule on tipping as the U.S, and it can be quite baffling for people in cultures where it isn’t a ‘thing’. I mean, it’s better to give too much than not enough though surely, has Oprah taught us nothing?

7.) Talking To Literally Anyone

(Source: Reddit)

As someone originally from Britain, talking to strangers in public is a very, very risky gamble as it goes against one of the key rules of Britishness, ‘Keep yourself to yourself’, unless you’re offering out cups of tea or crumpets’.

8.) American’s Freakin’ Love Ice

(Source: Reddit)

Yeah, so apparently this is a thing. This post actually came up twice, and I can’t say I really get it… I do freakin’ love ice though… and it probably explains why this is such a common thing…

9.) Easily Excited

(Source: Reddit)

As I said before, you’re allowed to be over excited when you’re on your holidays, it’s like the law I thought? Also, it’s better to be too loud than too quiet… that’s a thing right?

10.) Trying To Buy Literally Anything

(Source: Reddit)

American’s take buying things much more seriously than most other countries. What’s wrong with wanting to buy a packet of gum at half 11 at night, let me live my life!

11.) Stating their State

(Source: Reddit)

Yeah, they state their state… just thought I’d lay that on real thick in case anyone missed the word play there… Yeesh, it wasn’t even good word play really, but maybe if I was allowed to buy my energy drinks after 9p.m I’d be more on the ball, looking at you Europe! With your fancy arts and romantic accents and such!

12.)Neil Diamond

(Source: Reddit)

I mean, if you hear that song and don’t sing along to the chorus then there’s something fundamentally wrong with you.

13.) Cultural Curiosity

(Source: Reddit)

American’s are a curious folk, and so it’s only natural wanting to learn more about the cultural dialect differences between locations… I got you America, you keep being curious!

14.) Traffic Stopping

(Source: Reddit)

Why shouldn’t you have the confidence to think that you could stop traffic with how you’re rocking that shorts, white socks and sneakers combo?!

15.) Narrating Situations

(Source: Reddit)

Keeping people in your party abreast of a situation is critical when it comes to holiday-ing. I would absolutely want to know if the penguins were out or not, because odds are I would be going there for the penguins, so with this information I could adjust my expectations accordingly… still probably going to cry though, I freakin’ love penguins. Just look at em’… such grace and poise…

16.) Baseball Caps

(Source: Reddit)

TIL means ‘Today I Learned…’ in Reddit slang, I had to look it up and thought some people may need it too, I know I’m old, I’m over it.

17.) Being Too Happy

(Source: Reddit)

American’s are happy people… and for the final time… you’re on your freakin’ holidays, you should be smiling!

18.) Talking To Staff Like Real People

(Source: Reddit)

It’s surely just politeness this one? Unless you’re planning on asking someone ‘how are you?’ just to go ‘Sike! I don’t care, can I have the steak?’ Then you’re just an a**hole.

19.) ‘Y’all’ – That Is All

(Source: Reddit)

‘Y’all’ is a uniquely American expression. I love this phrase though, it feels so warm, but for a reason that I can’t put my finger on.

20.) Did Sherlock Write This One?

(Source: Reddit)

I wanted to end with ‘Y’all’, but this one was just so weirdly specific that I couldn’t leave it out. This is absurdly specific and yet now I won’t be able to resist looking at how people balance their weight when standing and what fingers they use when smoking… Christ my life has become less interesting in old age.

So those were 20 things that Americans do to give themselves away on holiday… not that they’re sneaking around trying to be incognito, but you get what I mean, I hope. Do you do any of these things on holiday? let me know in the comments below! AAx
