Sick Child’s Medical Bills Skyrocket, Doctor Recommends Parents Divorce To Afford His Treatment

Angela and Randy Tindell tried for a child for ten years, just when they’d given up hope they managed to conceive their son, Jackson.

The Tindell’s road to parenthood was a rocky road from the start. Angela’s pregnancy was classed as high risk because she was 42 when she fell pregnant. Despite delivering Jackson safely their troubles were far from over, as the first part of little Jackson’s life was spent in NICU.

Angela spoke to WVLT, saying, “There was a time they deemed him medically fragile, which meant, ‘we’re not guaranteeing that this baby will survive.’ He’s always been a fighter.”

Jackson is now in Kindergarten, so whilst he pulled through his initial health complications like an absolute trooper, there are still some medical issues. Jackson still requires a feeding tube and needs speech, occupational and feeding therapy.

I know he’ll be doing great and trying his best because he’s clearly a real soldier! The issue is Jackson’s medical bills come at a pretty hefty cost. Sometimes the couple struggles to make ends meet.

Despite Randy having a good job, he can’t make enough to cover household and medical costs. However, he earns too much to qualify for Medicaid, Tenncare to alleviate the financial strain of medical bills.

Randy confided, “You know that your child needs therapy, or he may need a procedure, but you also know that there is no physical way that you can come up with that kind of money.”

I think everyone will agree that this is a heartbreaking situation and it’s absolutely disgraceful that any family should be forced to make this kind of decision.

Angela also commented that “There’s always that fear that you’re not going to get it, you’re not going to be able to get what your child needs,” Angela said. “Yet you get up every day, and you try your hardest, and you work your hardest.”

I have so much respect for these amazing parents. It’s so sad that they’re struggling when they’re clearly doing everything they possibly can to give their little boy the best life possible.

Recently a doctor suggested they consider getting a divorce, as this could qualify them for TennCare.

The Tindells have already refused this option. Though we would absolutely sympathize if they chose this route to provide for their little boy, I’m equally in awe and admiration of their resolve. They’re going to face this struggle as a married couple, now that’s what you call a strong relationship!

The Tindells are hopeful that a new bill that lawmakers are considering on passing could revolutionize the way they are able to care for their child. If the bill is passed TennCare would be made available to more children who require care, providing financial assistance to those whose parents currently make “too much” to qualify.

All I can say is make it freakin’ happen already!

Angela summarised the situation perfectly “What we really want is what’s best for our son. We want these therapies and these things for our son now, so that when he does turn 18, he can live a full life and be a productive member of society.”

What do you think about this heartbreaking situation? Would you do the same in the Tindell’s position? Let me know all your well wishes in the comments below! AAx
