Oprah Condemns ‘Unfair’ Treatment Of Meghan Markle In Press

Meghan Markle has been fighting a constant battle against the press recently in terms of her representation within the media. This conflict hit new heights the other day when she and Prince Harry announced that they would keep the birth of their child totally private – but Oprah has leapt to her aid in a recent interview.

In an interview with ‘CBS This Morning’ Oprah said:

“I think she’s being portrayed unfairly, and I feel that if people really knew her they would know that she is not only everything we perceive of her in being graceful and dynamic in holding that position, but she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart […] I think it’s very unfair.”

It’s good to see someone as powerful as Oprah defending the Duchess of Sussex, I mean, the woman is about to have a baby and is being scrutinised and torn apart for absolutely everything she does – as if having a baby wasn’t freakin’ hard enough without the eyes of the world judging you for what shoes you’re wearing or how you are sitting.

However, if you’ll permit me to don my feathered, pink bonnet of scepticism for just a second, this move does come at a very convenient moment considering that Oprah and Prince Harry have just announced their collaboration on a new series of documentaries on mental health for Apple. Oprah, the billionaire media giant, knows how this industry works better than most people, so its a win win for her, she gets to defend a friend in the media somewhat and show the solidarity between her and her new partners.

Cynicism aside, this very public defence of the Duchess of Sussex comes at a great time for Meghan Markle as she received a torrent of bad press recently for her and Harry’s announcement that their child will not be paraded in front of the world’s press. This information was received, as you can imagine, about as well as marzipan rubbed violently into the eyes of almost every person working in British media.

The claims that they are breaking tradition have been constant and sniping, but with Oprah leaping to defend the Duchess of Sussex you would imagine that opinion must sway due to Oprah’s immense influence. Oprah also went on to say that the Duchess thankfully doesn’t let the bad press get to her, claiming that she doesn’t even read the bad publicity she gets:

“I think that’s remarkable that despite everything that’s going on she does not read anything.”

I understand that the press were annoyed because they won’t get as many stories if the birth is kept private (not that I agree with it), but I really don’t understand why so many people in the general public turned against her as well. People are naturally excited to see the new royal baby, myself in-freakin-cluded, but surely the wishes of Harry and Meghan in regards to the birth of their baby are more important?
