Obamas Mourn Notre Dame, But Assure It Will ‘Soon Awe Us Again’

In the wake of the Notre Dame fire tragedy, there has been an outpouring of thoughts and prayers from thousands of celebrities, politicians, and patrons of the building alike. One of the most recent being the Obama’s heartfelt statement: ‘It’s in our nature to mourn when we see history lost – but it’s also in our nature to rebuild for tomorrow, as strong as we can.’

The people of Paris are still recovering from the horror that was the sight of one of their most (if not the most) iconic buildings ablaze. The cathedral’s iconic spire was destroyed, but thankfully the efforts of over 500 firefighters ensured that the blaze did not manage to destroy Notre Dame’s famous towers.

The Obama family recently extended their sympathies to the people of Paris, with Michelle Obama offering this passionate statement:

“Being here in Paris tonight, my heart aches with the people of France. Yet I know that Notre Dame will soon awe us again.”

The message is one of profound positivity, a line which has been taken by the French President also as he tweeted:

“We are this people of builders. We have so much to rebuild. So yes, we will rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral, even more beautiful, and I hope that it will be completed within 5 years, we can.”

The importance of rebuilding the cathedral to the French people is not to be understated. Notre Dame is a staple of Paris and has become a veritable symbol of the city, its sheer awe-inspiring grandeur and intricate beauty is something that truly exudes an aura of majesty and ceremony.

While the damage is lamentable, it does no good to wallow in loss, and moving forward with conviction will be of the utmost importance to the French president as if the restoration doesn’t go successfully, there will surely be a massive backlash from the public – not to mention tourists.

There has been a flurry of donations to the fund with which they will aim to rebuild Norte Dame to rival its former glory; with François-Henri Pinault, CEO of the group that owns the Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, reportedly pledging $113m to rebuild Notre-Dame, and Bernard Arnault’s family and their company LVMH  having announced €200m on Tuesday morning.

What caused the fire at Notre Dame is not yet known, the most likely theory at present is that the blaze had something to do with the renovation work which was being conducted on the cathedral. An investigation is underway and I freakin’ hope they find out what caused it!

One of the more controversial school’s of thought currently playing out on social media is why there is so much money being donated to rebuilding the cathedral when the hundreds of millions could be put to much more pragmatic use in places such as third world countries or other charities around the world which deal with more pressing issues. After all, there are other churches that the people of France can use to practice their faith, and as important as the cathedral is, is it worth rebuilding in all its opulence over potentially saving people’s lives?

Do you think that they should redesign the spire, or rebuild it according to the old designs? And will it ever be as grand as it once was? Let me know in the comments! AAx
