Lori Loughlin’s Defence In College Admissions Scandal Claims She “Didn’t Know” She Committed Bribery
So the College Admissions Scandal continues to take up the news, and with good reason! A lot of seriously rich celebs thought they could weasel their kids into college places they didn’t earn…
Whilst several celebs have struck plea deals for reduced sentences, Lori Loughlin has made somewhat of a spectacle of her case by refusing to make a plea deal and (along with her husband Mossimo Giannulli) has maintained her innocence.
In failing to strike a plea deal Loughlin risks a lengthy jail sentence, with as much as forty years behind bars if she is found guilty.
Whilst some feel the punishment is an unusually harsh sentence for the crime, others believe that making ‘an example’ of these celebrities will discourage other rich folk from feeling immune to the law and reassure us “commoners” that we live in a just society…
Hmm… that’s questionable at best.
So, you’d think Ms Loughlin would be pretty confident that her defense was bullet-proof, air-tight and completely infallible. After all, she’s risking a huge increase in potential jail time in refusing a plea deal, so surely she’s got something really spectacular up her sleeve?
Right? Well, you’d think so, but…
TMZ reported that sources familiar with the case say that the line of defense Loughlin and Gianulli appear to be arguing is that they had no idea Rick Singer (a college bribery mastermind) was going to use their money to bribe USC coach to accept their daughter into USC.
Apparently, Rick Singer did not tell the couple just where their $500k was going, they had no idea how it would be used to get their daughters into the school. I too hand over large sums of cash with absolutely no idea what it will be spent on or who will receive it. Clearly, this defense is absolutely faultless.
However, the only (yes, the only) issue with this line of defense is that Gianulli sent $100k directly to the assistant athletic director…
I believe the word is ‘busted’?
TMZ also reports that the couple are taking another route of defense, arguing that rich parents have “donated” supposedly “charitable” gestures to the school (e.g. funding a library renovation) in return for “beneficial treatment” since such schools were founded and very little has been done to suggest this is criminal behavior.
And though I hate to admit it… they do kind of have a point…
Not that two wrongs have ever made a right… Pointing out how others have similarly abused a system isn’t a great look when you’re trying to prove your innocence. But hey! I’m no lawyer!
It’s looking worse and worse for Lori. I have to say, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for her. Although it’s terrible that she though her own daughters more deserving of an education than those students with the skills but not the financial means, who can honestly say they haven’t considered going to extremes to ensure their child got the best?
Her argument that “some parents get preferential treatment for buying the school a swimming pool and get away scot free!” certainly does hold some traction… though it maybe doesn’t excuse the crimes she is accused of in quite the way she thinks it does…
What do you think folks? Does Loughlin have a point? Or is this just another entitled celebrity stealing opportunities from less privileged people? Let me know in the comments! AAx
