Desperate Mom Sells 7-Year-Old Son To Settle Drug Debt

Last Friday, a Texas mother was sentenced to six years imprisonment after being convicted on three counts of purchasing or selling a child.

29 year old Esmerelda Garza sold her 7 year old son for $2,500 in order to pay off a drug debt that she had accumulated with her boyfriend. Garza was also sentenced to an additional two years  for crimes of money laundering and conspiracy to sell a child.  Her 8 year consecutive sentence was reached after she agreed to a plea deal in court, although she may not have to serve the full sentence.

Last June during a drugs search of Garza’s house authorities discovered that not only had she sold her son, but that there was evidence of her planning to sell her other two daughters as well!

The internet has been aflame with people shedding their thoughts on the sentence, with a lot of people claiming that the sentence is not long enough, but also with people pointing out that she should be admitted to a facility which helps treat her drug addiction more specifically what with that being the root cause of the case.

Speaking back in July, the 7 year old’s biological father made this statement:

“He put his trust in her, and that was the last thing he would think she would do. I never thought she would do this to my child. He just trusted mom so much that he didn’t think that anything like this would happen. You know, nobody would think something so ugly as this would happen.”

A report on the case states: ‘[Garza] and her boyfriend owe drug money and gave her child to (the woman) who (paid) $500 cash and clear the (owed) debt and an extra $700 when the ‘custody paperwork’ was signed.’

Garza’s ‘heinous’ crimes were made reference to by First Assistant District Attorney Matt Manning in a statement to Newswest 9  in which he made it abundantly clear that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated, and rightly freakin’ so:

“She was sentenced to six years in TDC, in prison, and the companion state jail counts […] She was sentenced to the maximum, which is two years in state jail. It’s very important to us that we send a very clear and unequivocal message: If you hurt children or have the audacity to sell a child, we’re going to do all we can to hold you accountable and put you in prison where you belong.”

The sense of desperation that would force a mother to feel that the only action she has left is to sell her children is truly unimaginable. Drug problems tear families apart on a near daily basis, and though there are a lot of fantastic charities dedicated to helping people in such awful situations, it’s horrific that cases like this still manage to occur.

At the end of the day, regardless of her fate, I just hope that the kids are in a safe, loving environment now. Goodness knows how this truly awful experience will go on to affect them. AAx
