Dad Goes Viral For Dry Nursing After Posting About It Online

A crying baby will drive parents to insane lengths in order to stop that sound that is the scourge of belligerent airline passengers everywhere, but one dad’s post recently went viral online when he asked if any other fathers let their kids ‘suckle’ in order to pacify them… and the internet had some (uncharacteristically) strong opinions.

The point of the post was two-fold, firstly to ascertain whether he is ‘weird’ for doing this, and secondly to gather any tips on how to get his daughter to ‘latch on’. The anonymous dad was also quick to make sure people were aware that he doesn’t want to lactate, that it’s just a comfort thing for his daughter.

The responses varied from some people defending the dad’s decision to do so, to some people being, well, less than enthusiastic about the choice. One person wrote:

“My [significant other] has tried to do this but I just yell at him and tell him not to. I just think it’s weird to do since the baby isn’t getting milk from the father… Plus hairy nipples can’t be fun to suck on.”

Which is much more thought out than the simply reply: “I think you’re pretty weird.”

Other replies were much more understanding with some of the more positive comments being:

“My husband was curious about it and let our 2-week-old latch onto his nipple, and immediately yelped in pain hahaha. I don’t think its that weird, kind of cute!”

And, “I don’t think it’s very common, but really, whatever works, right? If it soothes her and you don’t mind, I’m not going to judge.”

Quite frankly I don’t really see the freakin’ problem in it. If the daughter is calmed by it, and you’re comfortable with it then it’s probably good for bonding as well as calming the baby, so it’s a win win. The anonymous dad said himself, ‘I find myself experiencing a confusing mixture of joy at the connection between father and daughter’, which is a great thing, isn’t it?

Furthermore, according to some reports this practice is adopted in other cultures already with ‘the men of the African Aka tribe [dry-nursing] their babies while the women hunt.’ Also, as some people on the thread also pointed out, it does make for some freakin’ good stories for wedding speeches down the line!

The post was initially posted four years ago but has recently gone viral again. Now, I’m not saying that the two are related, but the post’s resurgence comes not long after the release of the male nursing aid which took social media by storm not one month ago… here’s a reminder in case you missed that particular gem…

I just absolutely love the guys face on the left of the photo, he looks like a man who’s so aware that he’s on camera yet has to be normal despite his blatant bafflement about what’s going on.
