Anambra passes bill that reduces funeral cost and mourning duration

The Anambra State House Of Assembly has passed a bill that reduces the cost of funeral and burial rites in the state.

The bill which also prosecute offenders, was sponsored by Hon. Charles Ezeani, the member representing Anaocha 11 constituency.

After due consideration by House during Wednessday’s plenary session, the bill was passed.

The bill provides that corpses shall not be deposited in the mortuary or elsewhere for more than two months counting from the day of the death.

The bill also puts an end to a mourning period for relations of the deceased, for more than one week from the date of burial ceremony.

Elaborate burial ceremonies, that may cause destruction of property, gunshots, praise-singing, blocking of roads and streets during burial ceremonies, have also been prohibited.

The bill states further that burial will be one day, and the family of the deceased shall provide entertainment for their guests on their own volition.
