Al-Bashir of Sudan: African tyrants must take note - Shehu Sani

The removal of Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan from office has sparked the interest of the whole world with many including Nigerian lawmaker, Shehu Sani, warning other “African tyrants” to take note.

The removal of Al-Bashir was orchestrated via a coup which was led by Sudanese defence minister, Awad Ibn Auf, on Thursday morning.

The military also announced that the constitution has been suspended and it will now be in charge of the country for two years from today.

It also announced the declaration of a three-month state of emergency while protesters are calling for an immediate set up of a democratic transition.

A large number of political prisoners have also been set free.

“I announce as minister of defence the toppling of the regime and detaining its chief in a secure place,” Mr Ibn Auf said in a televised address Thursday at about 2:00 p.m. local time. He will lead the newly-inaugurated supreme military council.

The journey to oust out Al-Bashir, who had ruled for 30 years from office started with a five days of massive protests across Sudan.

The protesters also demanded that no one near power within the time Al-Bashir ruled should be allowed near power again.

Speaking on the matter, the senator representing Kaduna Central hailed the courage of the Sudanese protesters while urging ‘African tyrants’ to learn from this.
He however urged that military rule should be brief, so as to enable the restoration of democracy immediately.

He wrote: The ouster of President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan is a welcome development. Light has finally come to the Sudan. A salute to peoples power. Another lesson for African tyrants. However, military rule should be brief and democracy should be restored immediately.
