16 Rules Of “Modern Underwear Etiquette” You Will Only Know About If You’re An Elegant Lady
Let’s be honest, there are many, many, many incredible things about being a woman – we are, after all, by far, the more superior of the sexes (sorry men, but it’s true). There are, however, quite a few not-so-incredible things about being a woman too. Like what!? You may be wondering. Well, I have one word for you ladies… underwear.
Okay, so our underwear can do a spectacular job when it comes to hiding our pesky body “imperfections”… however, when worn incorrectly is can also COMPLETELY ruin your entire look, especially if you fail to choose the right size and/or style.
So what do you need to do exactly if you want to create a totally beautiful and elegant look which will help you slay errr’day!? Well, you just have to remember all about “modern underwear etiquette”, obviously… whatever the heck that is.
Sheer Blouse Rules
Okay so here’s the thing ladies, annoying, the sheer blouse trend seems to be back by (popular!?) demand. It’s a risky game indeed, and it’s very important that you choose a bra of the same tone as your blouse.
In the past, a combination of a black bra and a white blouse (or if you were living for the 90s a neon pink bra and a white blouse) was fashionable but today it apparently looks awful because someone who is 100 years old and still wears real animal fur says so.
- It’s better to wear a beige bra without any colorful patterns.
- If your blouse is too sheer, you may replace your bra with a lace bralette.
- Avoid wearing white underwear as this color is much “too noticeable”.
Bra Rules
So apparently all stylists claim that there’s one major rule when it comes to bras: a bra should be invisible. Great! Super easy. I love being a woman.
First, you have to pay attention to the texture of the materials that both your bra and your clothes are made of.
- The looser your clothes are, the more decorative details your bra may have… so as you can imagine I have a lot of wildly decorated bras.
- If you happen to like tight clothes, you’re recommended to choose a “smooth” bra without any lumps. Such a shame that my local Walmart ONLY sell’s lumpy bras.
Tights Rules
TIGHTS! Oh, tights I don’t know about you, I love tights. But there’s always a fine line between mature tights and I’m-ten-years-old tights. They can make you look super elegant, but if you fail to choose “suitable” tights, they can 100% ruin your whole look. Pay attention to your shoes and of course, the type of event you’re wearing them to.
- In the office/at work, you have to choose neutral colors and wear nude tights with clothes of lights colors and black or brown tights with dark clothes. Keep in mind that your tights shouldn’t be darker than your skirt. (How embarrassing, I’ve been wearing black tights to work my whole life, I can’t believe no one ever told me about this vital fashion faux pas)
- Patterns and prints are good for a party… but not for every day.
- Thick tights look great with high boots but not with open-toe shoes.
What did I ever do before I knew all of that eh!?
Stockings Rules
During the summer months, stockings really help women who have to follow a dress code at work. To avoid crazy awkward situations, you should know a few rules that will help you look elegant and attractive… because obviously, that is the MOST important way a woman should look, right? Heaven forbid you spend one day not looking elegant and/or attractive.
- White stockings look good if you’re wearing a nurse uniform (kinky) or if it’s part of your wedding underwear. In other cases, it’s better to choose more “neutral” colors.
- It’s recommended not to wear stockings with patterns if you want to minimize the appearance of excess weight (???) since such stockings, as well as tights, make you look plumper.
Panties Rules

Now, you may think that panties play absolutely no role in your image whatsoever, I mean, hey, you may not even see the point of wearing them at all! But of course, we must remember one tiny detail that is able to utterly ruin your incredible look: panty lines that are extremely visible (dun dun duuuuuuuun)
- The size and shape of your panties mostly depend on the shape of your buttocks. (hopefully, this is not new news to any of you)
- The texture of your underwear and clothes should match, much like your bras! For example, if you wear an item made from light fabric, you should wear panties made from a similar material.
- In order to get rid of that problem with the elastic that literally “cuts” your body (we’ve all been there), you have to follow 2 rules: 1) choose high-waisted panties and 2) choose seamless shorts instead of thongs and bikini panties.
Our girl Bridget, for example, is the queen of choosing the right panties for the right occasion!
Bralette Rules
And last but not least, the bralette! Now, if you’re like me, then a bralette has probably not been anywhere near your body since the 60s. Just in case it has though, I figured I would include it anyway.
SO, a bralette is a top that does not have wires or molded cups. It is also pretty versatile, as you can wear it as both underwear and outerwear. Amazing.
- A brallete looks great on girls with small breasts as it’s basically meant more for shape (and let’s be honest, fashion) than support.
- It’s better to wear a bralette with a skirt or high-waisted pants.
- Here’s a “perfect” suggestion: wear a bralette under a sheer blouse (see what I mean? back at it with these sheer blouses). You only have to remember that the blouse shouldn’t be made from a lace fabric… otherwise you face SOCIAL SUICIDE.
So there you have it, ladies, do you feel more confident about “modern underwear etiquette” now? Do you feel you could go out and seize the day without fear of a visible panty line or highly embarrassing tights faux pas? Or do you think that this entire thing is absolutely outrageous and just another way for society to control how a woman dresses herself? Let me know in the comments! And don’t forget to share this with your friends and family too… you never know who may actually find it helpful! AAx
