15 Surprisingly Massive Things To Make Your Jaw Drop
There is something innate in humans which fills us with awe when we see something that makes us go, ‘Look at the size of that!’ It’s a unique and strangely common feeling shared by kids and adults alike, a unified marvelling at things which, though we may have seen pictures of before, blow us away with the spectacle of their hugeness (and yes that’s a word).
So strap in for some wholesome, world-affirming photographs of amazing things which are much larger than you may really think!
1.) The Heart Of A Blue Whale
Starting with quite a weird one, I promise they’re not all so bizarre. Blue Whales are renown for being large, but the sheer size of their heart alone is amazing, no wonder they’re such loving creatures!
2.) The Terracotta Army
I had to include this one because it’s one of my favorite things on Earth! Though on average each statue stands at around 5ft 11inches, the 8000 terracotta warriors cover an area of around 25, 380 square metres in total!
3.) Certain Species Of Jellyfish…
Decidedly less heart-warming than the whale heart, the Lions Mane Jellyfish can grow to 120 feet long! Can’t say I’d particularly want to see one too close up though.
4.) Inflated Horse Lung
I know horse are big, but how on earth that fits into a horse is beyond me!
5.) Christ The Redeemer
I think because typically photos of this are aerial shots from behind I wasn’t aware just how large it actually is until seeing people look like lego people next to it. The statue is actually 99 foot tall.
6.) Saltwater Crocodile
This just makes me have even more respect for Steve Irwin looking back. You’d have to put an awful lot of money or wine in that tank for me to get in there.
7.) The Great Pyramid Of Giza
There are three pyramids in Giza frequently referred to as ‘The Great Pyramids’, but the actual ‘Great Pyramid’ is the tallest of the three and comes in at 139 meters tall. It must feel how I do when I put on heels and my friends are in flats.
8.) Deep Oceanic Manta Ray
(Photo Credit: Deep Ocean Facts )
Quite frankly, as glad as I am that they took them, the divers who took these photos need their heads examined, there’s no way I’d be getting that close to something that huge! I suppose it shows that we have very little to fear from nature though, which is reassuring!
9.) Giant Sequoia Trees
A species of tree commonly known to us as redwoods, these trees are truly awe-inspiring. They’d make for one hell of a treehouse.
10.) Wombats

I thought we needed something to add a bit of cuddliness to the list, so here is a fully grown wombat looking adorable. You’re welcome.
11.) Jupiter Compared To Earth
Jupiter is frequently quoted as the ‘biggest planet in the solar system’, but when yo see how big it is in comparison to Earth, it really highlights juts how insanely big it is! You can barely see Earth on the photo above… or maybe I need to get my eyes tested, ah the wonders of getting old.
12.) Flemish Giant Rabbits
If you thought the wombat was cute, check out this bunny! Okay, so I know it says ‘giant’ in the name but how big can a rabbit surely be? Turns out, pretty big!
13.) The Ocean… Bear With Me
The ocean is a fantastic thing, and is miles larger than people often realise. The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench for instance is 36, 070 feet deep, you could fit over 3,500 school busses in that!
14.) Galapagos Tortoises
One of my favourite animals of all time, I feel a true spiritual connection with their somewhat sedentary lifestyle. Also, a species of Galapagos tortoise thought to be extinct for around 100 years was recently rediscovered… it was probably having a nap.
15.) The Moon
It may not be as big or impressive as Jupiter, but hey, the moon’s still cool! Honest!
Those were fifteen things that are much larger than we really think. The world, and the universe, is full of amazing things that can always surprise us, from rabbits to planets… I’ll stop sounding like a rosy-eyed after school special now, I promise. AAx.
