Woman Covers Her Face In Menstrual Blood Because It Makes Her Feel Powerful And Beautiful
A sex coach (yes, a sex coach – they ARE real things) who was once incredibly ashamed of her periods has now decided that completely covering her own face in menstrual blood is a wonderful way to end the stigma that surrounds it.
Meet Demetra Nyx. Demetra is 26 and since she has begun this out of the ordinary ritual, she says it has made her feel more ‘powerful’ and will regularly post various pictures and videos of her own blood-stained face and body to her own Instagram account.
When Nyx was 21 years old, she removed her contraceptive coil. She did this because it gave her extremely heavy periods, which, if you’ve ever gone through them, you’ll know they’re absolutely no walk in the park – in fact, they often left her bedridden for days. Ever since having it removed, Nyx has been experimenting with her own blood and believes that it has brought her closer to herself.
Nyx herself said:
“Our society teaches us that periods are dirty and inconvenient. Ads about menstrual products talk about smelling ‘fresh’ or making us cleaner, implying that our bodies’ natural functions are gross. My work as a sex coach largely focuses on where we hold our stories in our bodies. What society taught us about ourselves, what we learned about being women, assaults we may have experienced, what we learned our bodies are capable of during sex.”

She continued:
“I am endlessly fascinated by my body and its patterns. Many people talk about the parts of the cycle being like the seasons, with the energy of ovulation being like summer, and the energy of menstruation being like winter. I think that’s generally true, but I’ve also found it’s very individual. Sharing pictures of blood on my face and body was just an impulse – I was creating a series to help women connect with their menstrual cycle, and I thought it would be fun. We can also do things like paint with it or pour it into the earth. I believe it’s a beautiful thing to get comfortable with touching your own blood.”
When asked about the reactions she’s received from posting images and videos of such a nature, Demetra reported that she has, pretty unsurprisingly, received quite mixed reactions overall from people, even her own family members. However, the negative comments just seem to spur her on.

“My blood to me has become fun, beautiful, and powerful, and playing with it brings me closer to myself,” she goes on to explain.
“A really common comment I get is, ‘oh, you should just wipe poop all over your face then, it’s the same thing’. I also heard from friends and family that it was ‘weird’ and ‘disgusting’, and some people didn’t talk to me because of it. That encourages me to keep posting them – if it wasn’t having a necessary impact, people wouldn’t be so bothered by it.”
Demetra does, however, understand that not all woman will actually want to smear blood all across their own faces (I, for one, am all for her idea… just not her execution of it), she does reach out in order to urge us all to reconnect with our bodies.
“It can begin with just tracking your cycle or using a menstrual cup to collect your blood. No one has to put their blood on their face, though it’s seemed pretty liberating for women who have.”

So what do you say, ladies? Should we follow Demetra’s lead and form a blood-smearing facial supergroup? Do you agree with the message Demetra is trying to get across to womankind? Let us know in the comments and be sure to share this with your friends and family to spread Demetra’s message! x
