Texas Art Teacher Shows Off Her Dress Adorned With Drawings From All Of Her Students

At a time when there seems to be a lot of heavy news in the world, here’s something entirely wholesome for you to enjoy.

A Texas art teacher named Rebecca Bonner is warming the hearts of her community and people around the world, after she donned a dress adorned with hundreds of drawings created by her young students.

The project went viral after her 21 year-old daughter posted a couple of pictures of her mom wearing the dress in a tweet, which has since racked up over 100,000 likes.

“I got fabric markers and sharpies,” Rebecca Bonner told Good Morning America. “I laid out my dress for two weeks and just let them doodle on it.”

Sure enough, the kids were grateful for this blank canvas, and got to work right away on their new project.

Bonner is a teacher at Mcauliffe Elementary School in Highland Village, Texas, and said she got the inspiration for the dress from a private Facebook group of fellow elementary school art teachers where they all “share ideas, inspire each other and try to lift each other up.”

She said it was a great way to get her 580 students, who range in age from 3 to 11, “excited about art.”

“Being their teacher dressed up in their doodles is always fun,” she added.

This is obviously a woman who loves her job, and Rebecca was really happy just to have the kids get involved and use their creativity. That was reward enough in itself, but Bonner said she was pretty shocked when she found out photos of her project went viral, after her daughter, Charlece, posted them to Twitter.

“I’m not worried about being famous or anything like that but I do think it’s great to promote the arts, because elementary art is not everywhere,” she said. “I think it’s really important for kids to have that outlet, to have that place to create, and that freedom to create,” she added.

This is a great sentiment from Rebecca, who has said that her catchphrase is “turn your mess up into a dress up” – a great way to look at life!

Bonner’s daughter, Charlece Lake, 20, who tweeted the photos a few days ago, described her mom as “really passionate about showing how important teaching is, and the arts are in school.”

She said she just thought it was “the cutest picture” of her mom, but that she “had no idea it was going to blow up like this.”

It looks like this passion for art and molding young lives is very much a family trait, too. Charlece has said that watching her mom spark confidence through art in children is what inspired her to want to become a teacher as well, and she is currently pursuing her teaching degree in college.

“I think she just inspires students to be creative and just make their mistakes into something beautiful,” Lake said.

Well, this dress is certainly a thing of beauty! I’m so glad we got to see it. God bless you, Rebecca.
