Family Dog Sacrifices His Own Life To Save Baby From House Fire
Here’s a story that serves as a perfect example of how incredibly special a dog’s love is. Thanks to a family’s dog, named Polo, their baby daughter, Vivianna, is alive today after surviving an horrific fire that took over the family home. Tragically, Polo paid the ultimate price, and died protecting the baby.
8 month-old Vivianna was trapped inside her family’s Baltimore, Maryland home when the building was suddenly engulfed in flames. Their dog, Polo, was inside as well. Vivianna’s mother, Erika Poremski, says she stepped outside for just a moment when suddenly she saw flames.
But as Erika tried to rush back into the house to save her daughter and the dog, their efforts were in vain.
“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her. I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.”
When the Baltimore City Fire Department arrived on the scene, both the first and second stories of the home were engulfed in flames.
Stricken by panic and fear, Poremski told the firefighters her daughter and her dog were still both trapped inside of the house, and the heroic firefighters immediately rushed into the burning home without a second thought. What they found inside broke their hearts but gave them a huge sense of relief at the same time.
The firefighters found Polo lying on top of Vivianna’s body — and thank God, she was alive.
The 6-year-old dog, Polo, had covered the baby’s body with his own in order to protect her from the smoke and heat. In order to save the baby’s life, he had sacrificed his own.
“She only had burns on her side because of it. He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door. He was my first baby and now I lost him,” Poremski said through tears. “And I’m just praying I don’t lose her. She’s all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don’t understand it.”
You can watch the report on this amazing story below:
As Erika commented in the video, Polo wouldn’t even run downstairs and out of the burning building to safety – he knew that he had to protect the baby from the flames in any way he could.
Once she had been rescued, Vivianna was placed in a medically induced coma while they treated the burns on the one side of her body. Although Erika is eternally grateful for his daughter’s survival, Poremski will forever grieve the loss of their beloved fur baby that saved her daughter’s life.
Vivianna is getting reportedly better every day, but still has a long road to recovery. I’m sure one day when Vivianna has recovered and grown up, her mom will tell her the story of Polo, the faithful companion who saved her life.
This has obviously been a hugely distressing time for the young family. If you’d like to help with Vivianna’s medical funds and help them with rebuilding a new home and belongings, you can do so through their GoFundMe page.
