20 Of The Best Photos From The National Geographic Instagram Photography Contest
National Geographic has a talent for capturing the most incredible photos of the beautiful world we live in and the nature that occupies it. So, I’m not surprised to hear that they were the first brand on Instagram to reach 100 million followers! To celebrate this, they set up an Instagram contest, asking people to send in their very best photos around the world.
In 24-hours, National Geographic received over 94,000 photos! The people at National Geographic had their work cut out picking the top ten winners but they eventually managed it, you’ll see some of the winners and other entrants below.
These photos will make you want to travel around the world and see these beautiful places in person!
1.) Grand Prize Winner Ketan Khambhatta
This photo is so unexpectedly powerful. The wildebeest in the background, churning up the dust, look so majestic and create such depth. The zebra is so at ease, showing the harmonious relationship between nature.
2.) Finalist Adam Kiefer
Matthieu Shamavu is a National Park Ranger who is embracing an orphaned mountain gorilla. Humans have such a complex bond with the natural world, we can create such pain for nature but also cultivate, nurture and love it.

This stunning photo makes the beautiful deer look like a majestic mystical creature. The way the setting sun is perfectly captured in the centre of its antlers is just incredible!
4.) André Musgrove
The picture is just so perfectly serene, its impossible not to feel at ease just looking at it. It provides such a unique perspective on nature that we rarely get to see.

Those beautiful eyes and adorable little head tuft make this monkey so loveable I just want to give him a cuddle! Such a fantastic way to capture amazing animals.

This photo captures a summer thunderstorm that took place over the Grand Canyon. The picture is made up of a combination of long exposure shots taken during the storm to make this one grand finale.

The photo captures a beautiful moment at an elephant rescue in Thailand. We need to treasure elephants and protect them from the cruel people that want to use and hurt them. I love how excited and happy this elephant looks!
10.) Finalist Sandra Cattaneo Adorno
This photo looks so post-apocalyptic, it’s completely awesome! The heat mixed with the sand and stormy seas makes an unusual shot as people are reluctant to go into the water.
11.) Nicholas Parker
This photo captures the aftermath of one of the worst winter storms in Hawaii’s history. The next day, large pieces of coral were scattered across the beach due to how violent the waves were. The beautiful coral and angry sky look so amazing together!
12.) Juan Quinteros
To capture a shark like this up close is absolutely incredible if a little terrifying though! I have no idea how the photographer got this shot but I would prefer just to leave it a mystery.
13.) Andri Laukas
This perspective looks amazing and captures multiple seasons in one incredible photograph. I definitely need to go here, I doubt I would be able to recreate this photo though…
14.) Shivam
This looks like chaos caught between two worlds, I really want to know about the story behind this picture. It’s sad to see such luxury so close to people that live a hard life.
15.) Ulla Lohmann
This incredible photo shows Munganau walking home after the Tavurvur volcano has destroyed a beautiful Rabaul town. The people are so resilient and hopefully, believe that their beautiful town will one day return.
16.) Finalist Khatia Nikabadze
This adorable pair of lambs are staring out of a car window at a livestock market in Georgia. It’s incredibly sad to see that these lambs aren’t in the wild, enjoying their life as they should be.
17.) Finalist Felice Simon
These families are gliding on an ice rink in New York. The pristine glowing light that is raining down on these families almost symbolises hope and their bright futures ahead. A stunning photo of humanity at it’s best.

Never has a human had so much presence in a photograph before. The look in his eyes and intensity of his expression really hits home and makes you want to listen to his story.
19.) Caine Delacy
This deep sea fisherman is incredible. No gear or safety equipment, he is just so incredibly talented and focussed that he can catch them with his bare hands!
20.) Finalist Sara Stein
You have to stare at this photo for quite a while before you figure out exactly what animals these are! Actually, they are wildebeest gathering in preparation to fight at mating season.
