104 Year-Old Care Home Resident Fulfills Her Lifelong Wish Of Being Arrested By Police

It’s so important that we look after our senior citizens in their golden years, which is why a lot of residential homes have schemes where they fulfill the wishes of their residents. Usually it’s fairly standard stuff – someone who wants to ride in a Rolls Royce, or see Stonehenge, something like that.

Although, we did cover one a while ago were a 98 year-old woman asked to have a team of scantily-clad hunky butlers serve the residents their dinner – and got it, too!

British 104-year-old Anne Brokenbrow had different ideas, and asked to experience something that she had never been through before – being arrested by the police.

“I am 104 and I have never been on the wrong side of the law,” Anne wrote in a note. First of all, congratulations on being a model citizen for all of that time! But I have to say, most people would tell you that you’re not missing out on much.

Anyway, as it happens, Anne’s wish was one of the first to be granted at the care home, with a local PCSO team stepping in to help her tick being arrested off her bucket list.

They arrested the former secretary on the grounds of ‘being an upstanding citizen’, and whisked her off into custody. Quite right too – she makes the rest of us look bad, even for getting a parking ticket!

Of course, the officers were very gentle with Anne during the fake arrest, and she had a grand old time in the process. Speaking about her brush with the law, Anne said: “I had a lovely day it was interesting. Nothing like that ever happened to me before. They put the handcuffs on, I had the lot.

When asked what it felt like to be treated like a criminal, she replied “Well it will make me much more careful of what I say and do. But the police were very nice throughout.”

She continued: “I’ve got grandchildren, all fit and well – I hear a lot from them and see them quite often.”

Anne has dementia, and has been at the home for 10 months, where she is regularly visited by her granddaughter Sasha, who she raised. The Bristol care home, where Anne lives, was part of a scheme designed to invite members of the public to help the elderly.

It’s called The Wishing Washing Line project, and is run in conjunction with a local Co-op convenience store – the idea is that local shoppers can step in to help care home residents with their ‘wishes’. It has helped thousands of older people since its inception.

Simon Bernstein, CEO of Alive Activities, who run the scheme, said: “Our charity provides lots of creative activities for older people and engage the community in coming into care homes.”

“It can be very boring and quite lonely sometimes – with the best will in the world, some of the care staff don’t have the time to engage people in meaningful activities.”

“It can be as simple as going to the pub for a pint, or having somebody to knit with or play bridge with, it can be anything.”

This is so true – social interaction is a hugely important factor in our health, especially as we get into old age. It’s great that people are taking the time to make these senior citizens feel special. However, there are some wishes that simply can’t be fulfilled…

“One man said he wanted to see Elvis – but you can’t make every wish come true,” said Simon.
