US Father Dubbed ‘Miracle Man’ After Surviving Despite Life Support Being Switched Off
A family over in Nebraska have dubbed their father the “Miracle Man”, after he made a miraculous recovery from critical illness – continuing to breathe even after his life support was removed.
Father-of-four Scott Marr was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Omaha on 12 December after he was found lying in his bed, unresponsive but still breathing.
It was believed that Scott had suffered a stroke, and immediately the doctors put the 61-year-old on a breathing machine in intensive care. Sadly for Scott and his family, his situation began to deteriorate, and doctors feared he was on his way to ‘brain death’ – an unthinkable outcome for everyone involved.
Dr. Rebecca Runge, who works at the hospital, told KMTV: “We were worried in this case that this was not a reversible process and that it was going to proceed to brain death.”
It’s at this point the heart-wrenching decision to switch off his breathing machine was made. Despite being the hardest decision that a family could ever have to make, it was something that had come up in conversation in the past in relation to their dad’s health.
His daughter Preston explained: “He had always said, ‘I never want you guys to see me lying in a hospital bed, lying in a nursing home’.
The family decided to respect his wishes.
“They told us he was on his way to brain death, so we said our goodbyes before extubating him, all the monitors were shut off and we waited by his side.”
After leaving the hospital the following day, the relatives started making arrangements for a funeral service, which is when things miraculously turned around – it turned out Scott wasn’t ready to give up on life just yet.
Incredibly, the former sports announcer carried on breathing even after the life support machine was switched off, and continued to do so when his children returned to the hospital on 14 December to see their dad.
“When we got up there, I went in just to talk to him, like I have been this whole time, and said, ‘Hi Dad,'” recalled Preston. “He smiled at me, and I literally thought I was dreaming. It was the craziest moment ever.
Although Mr Marr was very frail, the joy that he felt in seeing his family was obvious, and he was responsive to his family’s conversation.
“I asked him to move his thumbs, and he slowly moved his thumbs, and I asked him to wiggle his toes, and he wiggled all his toes really slightly.
“I literally had to rub my eyes to make sure it was actually happening.”
As it turns out, Scott didn’t have a stroke at all, but instead was suffering from a condition called Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome, which was likely the result of high blood pressure.
Now he’s been released from hospital and is on the way to a full recovery thanks to the aid of physical therapy and his loving family by his side.
It’s no surprise that the family are overjoyed at the unexpected turnaround, leading them to dub their pops the ‘miracle man’. Speaking of which, Scott himself is thanking the man upstairs for giving him a second chance at life.
He said: “I’m not an extremely religious person. I don’t go to church every Sunday, but I do believe in God. I believe with all my heart. And now this is just proof for me that everything I’ve ever heard is true.
“That he loves me. That he’s right there for me. It was pretty much a miracle.”
Amen to that. We wish Mr. Marr and his family every happiness for the future.
