The 24 Best (And Not So Best) Things About Growing Up With Siblings

Siblings; you either love ’em or hate ’em. Well, actually, you pretty much love them and hate them all at the same time.

But I suppose that’s the glory of a sibling relationship, and if you don’t have any you will just never be able to understand (although some may say you’re the lucky ones). I myself, have a sister whom I love to death… but somedays she really tests my patience and I find myself focusing more on the death part than the love. part.

Despite this, however, there are many other perks of growing up with a sibling (or 5 of them if that’s the case), and after careful reflection, I have put together some of my favorites and conveniently listed them all for you below.

So scroll down and see if you agree with me! And if you don’t? Well… what are you gonna do? Tell Mom? Didn’t think so…

1. You become an expert casting director:

When I and my sister used to watch the Trolls together as kids, we had an absolute field day. Aaaaand usually a huge fight afterward.

2. And you learn to accept defeat graciously:

“Yeah whatever I don’t care” But you DO care. You’ve ALWAYS CARED. You know it, and worse of all, they know it.

3. You become a master at diagnosing injuries:

Everything seems to go into slow motion the minute your sibling actually starts crying real tears and the fear of God is struck into your heart. You immediately go into panic mode and start offering them every single one of your worldly possessions as long as they promise to not tell mom.

4. You learn to control your rage:

My sister is THE WORST FOR THIS. Funny how when it’s my food the excuse is “well we’re sisters and we share things” but when it’s her food I become the actual WORST person to ever GRACE THIS EARTH and will NEVER be FORGIVEN.

5. You become an Oscar-winning actor:

Okay, this is a pretty shady one but we all freakin’ do it anyway. No doubt their time will come when they get to watch you suffer the wrath of their actions. All part of the Sibling Circle of Life.

6. You get really good at disappearing:

“Oh damn is that the time totally forgot I told Jamie I’d study with her at her house tonight I promise to say nice things at your funeral okay byeeeeeee”

7. You learn what forgiveness is all about:

There is are no two people on the planet with LESS desire to hug each other than two siblings who have just had a massive fight and are not being FORCED into a hug by their mother.

8. You perfect the “SERIOUSLY” look:

Or THIS look:

Sometimes our parents don’t even bother calling us by each other’s names, to be honest. They just shout “1” or “2” depending on which sister they need to deal with first.

9. You become an expert in first aid:

Honestly, siblings can be SUCH drama queens sometimes. It’s not like I broke your freakin’ bones.

10. You learn the value of a great gift/the value of just adding your name to something:

“Hey so I totally forget to get Mom and Dad something for their anniversary, can we go halvsies and I’ll get the next one?” But they never ever do get the next one funnily enough, do they?

11. Everything they have BASICALLY belongs to you:

Whatever is mine is yours! Except for anything that is actually mine because that is 100% not yours at all.

12. You learn to never give up what you hold so dear:

Foolish mortal, you think you sitting in my seat will actually prevent me from sitting there now? Well, guess again, sucker.

13. You learn the power of a good relationship:

Like I said, it’s all about that balance. “I love you and I would literally die for you, but right now you need to get out of my face otherwise I will kill you.”

14. You become adept at sending secret messages:

Getting creative with ways to secretly threaten my sister without my parents knowing has always been one of my favorite pastimes.

15. You learn the nuances of technology:

Sometimes the classics are still the best form of revenge!

16. You learn to fight for what you believe in:

Look, momma never raised no quitter! And unfortunately, we have the same Mama so we might be here for a while.

17. You learn to create new words and languages that only you understand:

Me and my sister never went as far as to make our own language. We just make weird sounds and faces at each other and still somehow manage to know what the heck the other one is thinking. It’s a beautiful thing.

18. You learn how to handle situations like an adult:

This is 100% completely fair though. Like, I was here first, I chose the channel, this is MY time and it’s not my fault I can’t trust you not to switch over to old re-runs of Toddlers & Tiaras while I’m out of the room.

19. And you find out what victory truly means:

These were always the SWEETEST moments. Like yeah, that’s right, it was your fault I hit you cause you were provoking me, right Mom? SUCK. IT.

20. You get all the exercise you need:

Honestly, this got so bad in our house our Dad had to build us a new shower downstairs. The worst was always; “I’m gonna go take a shower” “YEAH BUT HOW LONG WILL YOU BE BECAUSE I WAS JUST ABOUT TO TAKE ONE.” Oh, you were? Really? REALLY?

21. You learn how to write touching, heartfelt notes:

I have a box filled with these “cute” notes from my sister. Most of them are covered in very unflattering cartoons of myself. Precious memories.

22. You become a master spy:

Be honest, your heart never races more than the moment you’re snooping through your siblings’ room looking for that thing you were told under NO CIRCUMSTANCES you could borrow because you desperately need to borrow and then you hear their footsteps. BYE FELICIA.

23. You perfect the perfect comeback:

Damn, I need to say something really witty and cutting here because I just got roasted.

Nah never mind I’m just gonna laugh back at them and make out like that’s what they sound like. Yeah, that’ll do the trick.

24. And lastly, you always have someone to answer your cries for help:

Honestly though, at the end of the day where the heck would we be without them!?

Don’t forget to tag your sibling so they know how much you appreciate them! But more importantly… so they know how much THEY should appreciate YOU!
