Railway Staff Suspended After Apparently Pouring Dirty Water Over Sleeping Homeless Man
One thing that I think the world needs more than anything right now is a little more kindness and consideration towards our fellow human beings. With that in mind, it’s infuriating and deeply sad to see people act callously towards the most vulnerable members of society.
This is exactly what happened in this recent incident in Sutton, UK, where two Southern Railway staff have been suspended following an incident at Sutton station in which a man – thought to be homeless – appeared to have dirty water thrown over him to wake him up and force him to move elsewhere.
The footage was uploaded to Facebook by Heidi-Liv Gravesen, who wrote: “This is how Southern fail staff treat another human being in Sutton and I didn’t start filming till they had already whacked him with the mop and put even more water on and around him. Complaint raised with Southern fail.”
In the video, which you can watch below, you can clearly see someone to the left of the frame pouring water from a mop bucket onto the floor where the man is lying down, before proceeding to mop the area. It’s fairly obvious that this was a deliberate action, as the man is clearly visible laying on the ground.
To make matters worse, the workers then question Gravesen as to why she is filming the incident, to which she responds: “That’s absolutely disgusting. Disgusting behavior of another human being – that’s why I’m filming it.”
In a comment, Gravesen explained there had been ‘some trouble earlier’ with the man, but when they started pouring the water ‘he was sleeping doing nothing to nobody’. “My point is then call the police – two wrongs and all that,” she said.
Other people were equally unimpressed by the scenes when it was posted online, with one person commenting: “This is disgusting. Not only is this a vile way to treat anybody, it was outside the station, so on PUBLIC HIGHWAY!
“The water is filthy and looks like it had some kind of disinfectant in it, which is really dangerous to put on somebody’s skin. What’s worse, the worker says he’s going to get MORE!! I hope Southern fire these scumbags immediately.”
Someone else added: “Have some respect for those less fortunate. I wonder if he’d do that to a normal commuter who decided to sit down and refused to move.”
It really was a disgraceful act, regardless of what had transpired leading up to that. Southern Railway has since said it has suspended the two members of staff from the video, along with a third. They have remained unnamed.
Angie Doll, Passenger Services Director for Southern Railway, told LADbible: “We take this incident extremely seriously and have started an investigation. We suspended the two members of staff seen in the video and a third colleague who we identified from station CCTV.
“We would like to apologize to the homeless man and we are trying to make contact with him to offer help and support.”
It’s good that Southern Rail have (eventually) done the right thing in suspending these employees, but it still riles me that they were able to show such a lack of humanity and empathy in the first place.
