Olivia Colman Is My New “Favourite” Person After Giving The Most Endearing Oscar Acceptance Speech Ever
Hello everybody, I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far! I know I certainly I am. Do you want to know why? Well, I’ve found my newest spirit animal, and she goes by the name of Olivia Colman.
I’m sure it’d be no surprise to you if I told you it was renowned actress Glenn Close who was the widely favored Oscar pick for Best Actress in a Leading Role, would it? So you can only imagine just how surprised (I think it’s fair to say, literally everybody) was when it was actually Oliva Colman’s name read out at the recipient of this award.
However, I can promise you this – no matter how surprised you may have been when you heard Olivia Colman’s name, you weren’t even close to how surprised she was to hear it herself.
Visibly stunned, the actress from “The Favourite” (and if you haven’t seen it yet I recommend you go and watch it IMMEDIATELY) literally had to take a moment out to get her bearings before heading onstage to accept her award and to deliver what is now possibly my favorite award acceptance speech of all time.
Okay, so it wasn’t a grand speech. She didn’t make any socially relevant or huge political statements (although personally, that’s one of the main reasons I enjoyed it so much). It honestly wasn’t a spectacle in any way whatsoever. It was just so geniune, so heartfelt, so absolutely bloomin’ lovely that we all collectively felt like we were watching a very good, old friend up there on that stage achieving their wildest dreams.
To put it in other words, she was just so incredibly British about the whole thing. Her humility, humor and not to mention her adorable fluster of the whole thing was 100% was the highlight of the evening.

She started off with a statement that gave us all complete access to what was running through her perplexed brain in that exact moment:
“Oooh,” she gushed in her extremely proper British accent, while she gazed bewilderedly around at the audience. “It’s genuinely quite stressful.” Then she giggled. “This is hilarious,” she then finally said before squeaking, “I got an Oscar!”
And honestly, “This is hilarious” is about to become my new response to literally anything that happens in my life from now on.
Not to mention, we all completely felt that, you know? That would be the reaction I believe most of us would respond with if we had just won an Oscar. It wasn’t neatly put together and literally none of it was rehearsed… you could see her trying to figure out a way to get through all the people she should be thanking while also battling the complete disbelief she was experiencing at that moment in time.
And not to mention – her short, sweet and incredibly sincere tribute to Glenn Close, which was shortly followed by her blowing a raspberry at the teleprompter.
I mean, think about it. How is it your supposed to react when you win an award that literally everybody expected to go to an absolutely iconic, well-seasoned actress who’s actually never won an Oscar before? Well, if you’re as golden hearted as Olivia Colman is, you acknowledge it with humility and grace while at the same time making millions of people all over the world fall completely head over heels in love with you.
“You’ve been my idol for so long, and this is not how I wanted it to be,” Colman said directly to Close. “I think you’re amazing. I love you very much.” (And for the record, to give Glenn Close her dues, her response in the audience could not have been more gracious and reserved, which again is amazing)
Not only ALL of this, but Colman was also able to evoke laughter from the audience (within the theatre and watching on their tv sets at home) multiple times while she thanked her family as she joked about whether or not her kids were actually watching this moment at home. She also wonderfully encouraged young actresses who might be sat at home imagining themselves “on the telly” as she once used to during her days as a cleaning lady.
And then of course, how can I not mention the piece de resistance: She blew a raspberry at the time clock police when they posted a prompt for her to start wrapping up.
OUTSTANDING.
And then as she began to wrap it up, she just started thanking literally everybody… including Lady Gaga… because hey, why not!?
Possibly my most favorite moment of the whole event, however, is why she started thanking her husband of 25 years because it was just SO. CUTE. She also thanked the cast and crew of “The Favourite”, and Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell who of course presented her with the reward. She also thanked Lady Gaga who was sat in the front row before blowing her a kiss. She literally just wanted to thank absolutely anyone who was involved in any way possible with this dream-come-true. I just want to sop her up with a freakin’ biscuit.
But you know what? Don’t just take my word for it, you really do need to see it for your own eyes to be able to appreciate just how endearing the whole experience really was. And I’ve linked the video for you below!:
