Former Governor of Kano and Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso (PDP) has lost his re-election bid to archrival Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Progressives Congress.

Kwakwanso polled 274,125 votes, while Shekarau polled  499,835 votes to defeat the incumbent senator.
