Elderly Man Writes To Thank Seller Of VHS Player As He Can Now Watch His Old Happy Memories

With all the advancements in technology over the last 25 years or so, writing a letter has become something of a lost art. Personally, I think this is a real shame – a letter is so much more personal, so much more meaningful than an email or text message.

But then again, the fact that we don’t receive as many personal letters just means that, when we do, it’s that bit more special.

If you doubt the legitimacy of the saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’, you might want to read on. An eBay user by the name of Matt Shoukry, from St Louis, Missouri, probably thought nothing of it when he posted his VHS player on eBay – it generated a few bucks from something that he otherwise may have just thrown in the trash.

Little did Matt know what huge benefit the buyer would receive from his sale – and that he would tell Matt all about it, too.

As it turns out, the buyer was an 86-year-old pensioner based in Phoenix, who had never actually used eBay before.

Matt boxed up the vintage device and off it went in the mail. Understandably, that’s the last Matt thought about it until, on February 10, he received a letter inside a handwritten envelope addressed to him.

The heartwarming note from Don was typed up and told Matt just how grateful he was that he sold the video player to him.

And why, you might ask, was he so overjoyed to have bought a seemingly obsolete piece of technology? Because it allowed him access to a lifetime of memories, stored in old VHS tapes.

He wrote to Matt about his joy of being able to watch his fond memories and celebrations on screen, and his letter was a real tear-jerker.

It stated: “I found my old VHS tapes recently and wanted to see what is on them and realized I had no player. So I went to eBay for the first time and discovered your offer.

“I bought your VHS and you shipped it within a few days. The VHS looks new and unused. Amazing. I had some issues getting it going which were mine and not the player.”

“I am 86 and perhaps not up to my game but I do get there eventually. And I did, and discovered the VHS works perfectly. Thank you so much for your care, your efforts, and your promptness.”

Then came the real emotional moment: “I watched tapes of my retirement party from 25 years ago which I had never seen before. Jeez, were we young. Then a tape of my wedding with all the family and friends, many of which are no longer around.

“Then skiing trips, kids growing up, travels, and most importantly the gentle maturing of my family. Each one more fun than the last. All thanks to your generous selling of the VHS player.

“I thought you would appreciate how much someone has enjoyed your offer.”

Matt certainly did appreciate the letter. How amazing that he was able to look back on this lifetime of happy memories! It’s so sweet that he thought to write Matt and tell him all about it.

Matt told Fox2 that he sat down with his girlfriend to read the letter and they ‘were both on the verge of tears reading it’.

It doesn’t end there either because being the absolute LAD he is, Matt said: “I’m going to have it framed and keep it next to my desk in my house because it means a lot to me.”

It also sounds like the two have struck up a kind of long-distance friendship, too:

“I’m also going to offer to digitize his videos for him so he doesn’t have to worry about those tapes degrading.”

What an amazing gesture. I think this story has made my day!
