The United States of America; It’s a big place. And I mean BIG. 50 states big, to be exact. And within each of those states, you can find many, many towns.

Can you imagine what a chore it must have been to name all those towns? It honestly hurts my head just thinking about it.

SO, because I have nothing better to do, I looked into just how many towns there are (the answer; around 19,354) and on my journey of discovery, I discovered something else; some of the names of these towns are absolutely RIDICULOUS.

Here, I have gathered 33 of my favorite, most ridiculous town names. So go ahead and scroll down… who knows, maybe your hometown made it on the list!? (I apologize in advance if it did… kind of.)

1. Satan’s Kingdom, Massachusetts

And here’s me calling my hometown Satan’s Kingdom when it was actually in Massachusetts all along! Well, don’t I feel foolish!?

2. Ding Dong, Texas

Okay so how many “Ding Dong” jokes (aka, the electronic version of “Knock Knock” jokes) do you think people who live in Ding Dong hear on a daily basis? I’m gonna take a wild guess and say a lot.

3. Mosquitoville, Vermont

Who came first, the settlers or the mosquitos? Maybe this is just a clever way of keeping “out-of-towners” out of their town?

4. Accident, Maryland

Whoops, I know a few people who may have originally been brought up here. Rumor has it that the next town over is named “Mistake”.

5. Whynot, North Carolina

“Man, I just can’t think of anything good to name this town”

“Why not?”

“Yeah okay, that will do.”

6. Handsome Eddy, New York

Okay so either this town was discovered by a guy named Eddy who was very full of himself… or his mother.

7. Chicken, Alaska

This one could go one of two ways; either . when the settlers first arrived they found the place overrun with chickens or… it’s a town full of cowards.

8. Toad Suck, Arkansas

…I don’t even want to think about where the name “Toad Suck” may have come from.

9. Frankenstein, Missouri

If I had known this town existed 20 years ago I would have MOVED THERE IMMEDIATELY. 10/10 town name choice. I approve.

10. Okay, Oklahoma

I can see the Trip Advisor reviews now; “It’s not GREAT, It’s only Okay.”

11. Boring, Oregon

This brings a whole new meaning to the term “Boring people”. Also, I absolutely LOVE how they have a restaurant called the “Not So Boring Bar & Grill”. Good effort, Boring.

12. Volcano, Hawaii

PLOT TWIST: Volcano in Hawaii is the only place in Hawaii that actually doesn’t have a volcano.

13. Worms, Nebraska

Do you think at this point they were simply just running out of animals to name towns after? Talk about drawing the short straw.

14. Plenty Bears, South Dakota

Legend has it the name “Plenty Bears” came from back when the settlers first came to this land and asked the native’s what it had to offer. (And yes, I did just totally make that up).

15. Santa Claus, Indiana

What, you think Santa Claus lived in the North Pole all year round? Oh honey no, even Santa needs a vacation every now and then too. And what better place for the busiest man in the world to vacation than… Indiana!?

16. Bald Head, Maine

I can’t help but feel that this one is a nickname that got wildly out of hand.

17. Pie Town, New Mexico

I’m not 100% sure why this town in New Mexico is called Pie town, but I am 100% sure that I want to live there. Especially as they seem to have a pie shop named “Pie-O-Neers”.

18. Scratch Ankle, Alabama

“Okay guys so the first we do here is what we’re gonna name the town aft-”

“Oh darn it! I just scratched my freakin’ ankle!”

“…Great.”

19. Pig, Kentucky

And here’s me thinking Kentucky was known for its chicken! I applaud the existence of the “Porky Pig Diner” though, absolutely amazing.

20. Waterproof, Louisiana

Had did they figure this one out then? Was there a flood? Did it rain and nothing get ruined? Is this where waterproof mascara really comes from!? So many questions.

21. Coward, South Carolina

Chances are, this town did not get to pick its own name and most probably lost some sort of bet.

22. Beer Bottle Crossing, Idaho

Weird, this is exactly what we used to call the bridge that was built next to my old high school.

23. Chili, Wisconsin

Wait, so, where chili cheese fries invented in Wisconsin? I REALLY NEED TO KNOW.

24. What Cheer, Iowa

The real question here is, should there be an exclamation point (!) or a question mark (?) at the end of this town name?

25. Possumneck, Mississippi

Possumneck is literally the most Mississipi-ish town name I have ever heard in my entire life.

26. Dull, Ohio

Just when you thought living in Boring would be bad, I give you; Dull, Ohio. And judging by the picture itself, the name of this town is 100% accurate.

27. Fries, Virginia

WELL, I know exactly where I’m going to be retiring to in a few years. Fries, here I come!

28. Mormon Bar, California

Is this town name ironic or just seriously not well thought out? One thing is for sure, whoever named it had a simply glorious sense of humor. Only in California.

29. Free Soil, Michigan

Free Soil? Maybe they should consider getting together with the people of Worms, Nebraska (sorry, I couldn’t help myself).

30. Jackpot, Nevada

I mean let’s be real here, there’s literally no other state a ton named Jackpot could be really, is there? This is just great.

31. Odd, West Virginia

Well, we’ve seen Boring, we’ve seen Dull and now I give you… Odd! And I tell you what I find odd about Odd… the fact that the only thing within Odd seems to be a church!? Odd, odd indeed…

32. Big Bottom, Washington

I’ve got to ask; is this where all those Fat Bottomed girls Queen sang about come from!? (I’m sorry, I’ll stop soon, I promise.)

33. Catfish Paradise, Arizona

But how do they KNOW It’s a Catfish paradise? Did somebody actually go and ask the Catfish what they thought about the place? To me, this seems like a town name which is wildly based on assumptions.
