Note Handed To English-Speaking Patient In Chinese Hospital Cracks The Internet Up
Travelling the world can be a whole lot of fun, and it’s something that people should do if they get the chance. However, it can come with a whole heap of challenges, not least of which is the inevitable language barriers.
If you’re on a short trip to Mexico, and your terrible Spanish results in a hilarious misunderstanding, that’s one thing. However, if you’re an international student on the other side of the world, and end up in hospital, it’s a whole lot more concerning.
Still, a Reddit user by the name of WaspDog still managed to find humor in this exact situation. As an inpatient at a hospital in China, this person required surgery.
As you will probably know, most surgeries require you to fast in the house before the procedure, and this was no different. However, since the on-duty nurse hardly spoke any English, the patient was handed this note to inform them of what was happening:
Because we know the context of the note, it’s pretty clear what it means – ‘Don’t eat or drink after 10PM tonight, because you will be in surgery at 8AM’.
However, the basic English and crude drawings seemed to give it a whole new meaning altogether, which was picked up on by people commenting on the thread:
I mean, you can see where they’re coming from, with the blood-dripping knife and everything. On the other hand, it could have just been a warning about washing up after yourself…
Or alternatively, preparing the patient for a treat.
But most people generally took it the same way.
It would be pretty frightening to get that note, but judging by the fact that the patient posted the note on Reddit, and is having a good laugh about the whole thing, we can only assume that the operation was a success and they’re back to their usual selves.
Maybe try a translation app next time!
