18 Year-Old Discovers She Is NINE MONTHS Pregnant Despite Having Flat, Toned Belly Copy

Most of us will have heard stories over the years of women having no idea that they were pregnant until ridiculously late in the pregnancy – sometimes even until they go into labor. Given how much of an ordeal pregnancy is for some women out there, one might wonder how this could possibly happen. But it does, and it’s not just bigger ladies who don’t notice their bump emerging, as demonstrated by this story coming out of the UK

A teenager named Saffron Heffer was shocked to find out she was NINE months pregnant, despite having a flat stomach and being a size 8 at the time.

Saffron, who has long been something of a gym bunny, says she had no clue about the pregnancy until she noticed a strange mark on her stomach, and then took a pregnancy test at the suggestion of her mum.

To the amazement of the 18 year-old, the test came back positive, but she still didn’t know exactly how far along she was until she went to the doctors. It was she got there that she was told she was in fact 37 weeks pregnant, meaning that the baby would be due any week now.

As well as being overwhelmed by the information, it brought up some concerns for Saffron when she looked back on the previous 9 months. While pregnant women are advised to take it easy, Saffron had been pounding the gym sessions as usual, as well as using sunbeds – something that is definitely a no-no for expectant women.

There had been some signs from her body – the 18-year-old, from Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, had missed periods, for example. However, she had put this down to the contraceptive pill she was taking (which obviously didn’t work!).

Saffron said “It was a surprise for everyone. My mum was just as shocked as I am. I personally didn’t believe it was possible [to not know you were pregnant] until it happened to me. People said it and I heard the stories and I thought they must have known. But until it happened to me I was completely oblivious”

The pregnancy also had a complication, as an emergency midwife appointment confirmed her baby was back-to-back in her womb. After her midwife twisted him around Saffron’s stomach ‘popped’ into a giant bump, and she finally looked as pregnant as she was.

The positioning of her unborn baby would go some way to explaining why she hadn’t had a bump until that point.

Just six weeks after finding out she was pregnant, Saffron gave birth to her son, Oscar Heffer, weighing in at a healthy 8lb 1oz on June 3.

Saffron was completely unprepared for becoming a mom, but she is loving it:

“I just got on with it and a few weeks later he was born. I wouldn’t turn back now – he’s beautiful. He’s perfect. If you had to ask for a perfect baby it would be him. He’s so content, he just sits and sleeps and cuddles. He’s so lovely.”

When it came to light that she was pregnant, the 18-year-old said she was terrified at the prospect of being a new mom, and didn’t know how to react. She said she thought her life had ended, but that feeling didn’t last.

She said “I was just hit with depression and thought ‘what am I going to do’? It was the shock – I didn’t know how to respond. After that two weeks I had the get-go mindset that it is what it is. You can’t change anything.

I was just like – right, okay, I can do this. I’ve been strong with other things before. This is a bit bigger, but I can do this. I just got on with it really.”

It’s pretty amazing that doctors hadn’t realized she was pregnant sooner – after feeling lethargic for months, she had visited her doctor, only to be told that and being told that she was anaemic and deficient in vitamin D and B12. Saffron never guessed she was pregnant.

In fact, she even lost weight during this time – going from a size 10 to a size 8 – and believed she must be seriously ill as her symptoms weren’t improving.

“At one point I thought I was dying because I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I was so lethargic and sleepy, I didn’t want to go out, I didn’t want to see anybody. I didn’t want to spend time with anyone ever because the littlest things annoyed me and got on my nerves and I didn’t know what to do.”

All this time, it was her body trying to tell her to take it easy, as she had a son on the way. I’m so glad to hear that Saffron has embraced motherhood, and is happy with baby now. Welcome to the world, Oscar!
